News from the CHMS PTO

We Need a VP of Communications

Dear CHMS Parents,

As this most interesting school year winds down, I think we can all agree that newsletter and notification communications sent by the PTO are critical!  With ever-changing information, it’s nice to know you’ll have an update in your inbox on Sunday morning or a reminder pushed out real-time.  These communications will continue to be invaluable as we enter the new school year this fall.

We currently do not have a VP of Communications for the 2020-21 school year.  Please consider volunteering to fill this critical role so the PTO Board can continue to provide weekly and up-to-the-minute communications to our parent population.

If you are interested or would like more information, please email Jenny and Michele at president@chmspto.org.  This doesn’t have to be a one-person job!  We encourage any volunteer to find one or two friends to help out.

Thank you and have a wonderful summer!

Student’s possessions, currently at the school, are being boxed up and labeled for pick up.  While we gather and organize student’s items at school, we need parents and students help to locate and return school property from home.  School issued property that is still at home should be placed into a paper grocery bag and clearly labeled with the child’s name on it.

School items may include:

  • Textbooks (double check child’s name is written inside)

  • Laptop, charger, bag (8th graders only)

  • Library books

  • Other school property

Pick-up and Return Procedures

We’ve simplified this process to increase both safety and efficiencies when picking up and returning items.  Prior to your planned arrival at CHMS, place items belonging to the school into a paper grocery bag and clearly label it with your child’s name.  Place the paper bag into the trunk of your vehicle so staff can access it easily at school.  In addition, write your child’s name clearly onto a piece of paper.  Place the piece of paper with your child’s name on the passenger side dash of your vehicle so staff can see it when you arrive at CHMS.

Following these steps will help us safely and quickly move families through the car line.

  1. Enter the CHMS pick-up/return line using the entrance off of Chicago Ave. nearest the Clarendon Hills Park District.

  2. Utilize the regular traffic flow pattern that weaves through the Park District lot and then through the firelane. Click here for traffic pattern

  3. Maintain a single file car line along the sidewalk and pull forward as space comes available until you reach the front doors.

  4. Remain safely inside your vehicle at all times.

  5. Clearly display the child’s full name on the vehicle’s passenger side so staff can easily see it.

  6. Once at the head of the line, please open your vehicle’s trunk allowing staff to place your child’s box of possessions inside and retrieve any bag of school items you wish to return.

  7. Dr. Brown will come to the vehicle to present each graduate with their diploma.  This envelope includes: Graduation Certificate, Graduation Program and PTO sponsored gift cards.

  8. Exit turning right (Eastbound) onto Chicago Ave.

8th Grade Celebration and Parade 6/1

We are so proud and excited to celebrate our graduates!

On Monday, June 1, we will be sharing out with all 8th grade students this year’s virtual graduation video.   It will be pushed out to each student’s Google Drive for all to view, download, and share.  Be sure to watch as a family and enjoy the music performances, virtual walk across the stage and award winners.  (Note: student Google Drives will remain open until July 30, 2020)

In celebration, we are inviting our 8th grade families to come back and participate in a graduation vehicle parade.  The vehicle parade will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June. 1.  The parade will be led by CHPD and one of its police cars.  Participants should line up behind the police car on Norfolk Ave. along the south end of Prospect Park. (Click here to see start to end parade route)

The parade route will consist of one lap past CHMS beginning on Norfolk Ave. and precede northbound along Oxford, then turn eastbound on Chicago Ave.  It will continue past the school before turning southbound into the bus lane and exit onto Prospect Ave.

CHMS Staff will be practicing safe social distancing as they are spaced out along Chicago Ave and clapping out our 8th grade graduates as they pass by in the parade.  This celebration is optional for both families and staff.  It is exclusively for our 8th grade families and graduates as we want to honor their time with us at CHMS! We do miss our 6th and 7th grade students,  but want to keep this special for our 8th grade families. Participants are expected to follow the fire engine and must stay safely inside their vehicles at all times during the vehicle parade.  We ask drivers refrain from driving and using cell phones. We really hope you will come back to participate in the parade as our staff would love to wave “goodbye” to the 8th graders.

Show us your #CHMS2020 photos! Please take photos of your celebration at home and send them to communicationsdepartment@d181.org. We’ll share them in a live feed on our Twitter @ccsd181, in a photo collage in our June eNewsletter and other District publications.

6th & 7th Grade End of Year Activities:

We are so proud and excited to celebrate our students and all their accomplishments this year!  On Monday, June 1, we encourage 6th and 7th graders to attend all their remote learning classes including advisory.  This schedule has been developed to allow students to say goodbye to their classmates and teachers.

FAQ Pick Up/Item Return

What if I have a child in 8th grade and a 6th or 7th grader.  Do I need to make multiple trips to the school to retrieve my children’s effects?

No. We encourage our 8th grade families with additional children in 6th or 7th grade to only make one trip and follow the 8th grade schedule for pick up and drop off.  Please help us in such cases by having the names of each child displayed on the passenger side dashboard of your vehicle.  In addition, have a separate paper bag for each child returning school items with the child’s name clearly labeled on it.

What if our family is unavailable or feels unsafe to participate at this time on the scheduled pick-up day?

While families are encouraged to participate, it’s understandable that this may not work for all.  The school will schedule an additional opportunity over the coming summer months to accommodate such needs and share out to families when available. There is no need to contact CHMS at this point if you cannot make it.

What if there is inclement weather?

If weather conditions are severe parents/guardians will be contacted via email of any postponement or plan modifications.
