SPOTLIGHT ON JAN MICHAELS

Janice Michaels is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor, and Registered Play Therapist. She earned her MS in Counseling Psychology and Human Service from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA.  She moved to Savannah in 1998 and began working with young children and families in both clinical and educational environments. As a former public-school teacher, Ms. Michaels has served and supported families in understanding and developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans. As a play therapist, Ms. Michaels believes in providing a safe place for children to express feelings through play. She believes play is a language and toys are used as words. Through the use of non-directive play, children are free to choose their individual self-expression. Directive play techniques are used to guide change in behavior and thoughts. Ms. Michaels believes parental and sibling interactions are a crucial part in therapy, and both are encouraged to participate in the play room as treatment progresses. Techniques such as rules on how to fight fair, family time out/time in, and a variety of games are part of family sessions.  In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and swimming.
