Archer School Passes Climate Resolution
By Nora Adler
Hello! My name is Norah Adler, and I am a rising senior at the Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles California. I first heard about Schools for Climate Action through my mom who is involved in the Citizens Climate Lobby and heard about S4CA through them. When she explained to me what Schools for Climate Action did, I immediately wanted to write my own resolution for my school's student leadership. It felt like I could easily be a part of something bigger than my own community and help to make a greater impact as a student. The resolution took a very short amount of time to write, and I presented it to some administration at my school to make sure they were ok with having my school's name on the resolution. Then I met with the student body president right before quarantine started, and I was able to pass the resolution!
Community School Passes Resolution
By Eleanor M. Reagan
Urban Community School asks its 8th grade students to carry out a year long graduation project. This year's guiding theme was environmental justice. In addition to researching their topics, students were to take a concrete action to make a positive impact related to their chosen field. Five students had topics related to climate change. After becoming involved with Citizens Climate Lobby last June and gaining an understanding of participating in democratic processes, I was inspired to offer to guide Joell, Darius, Morgan, Mimi, and Carina in the process of creating a climate resolution. In January we began weekly meetings to learn about what in the world a climate resolution is, how to write one, and to do with it after it is complete. The students presented the UCS Climate Resolution for a Liveable World to the Student Senate and middle school community. The resolution enjoyed wide support and will be put forward to our congressional representative in the fall. The effort will be continued by our middle school environmental club. The team of students and I am grateful for the resources that the Schools for Climate Action offers to make this process doable. Urban Community School is proud to be part of this organization that gives students a voice to take action.
