16 Dogs Rescued
From Single Family Home!

On Sunday, May 24, C.A.R.L. responded to pleas from the rescue community to save 9 Chihuahua-mixed dogs. Even though we were having financial problems, we needed to help. None of the dogs had been spayed or neutered.

Four C.A.R.L. volunteers loaded 2 vans with crates and traveled to South Central Los Angeles. When they arrived it was much worse than expected! All of the dogs had lived their entire lives outside on a cement patio with very little human touch. They were curious and wanted the treats the volunteers brought, but were very scared at the same time and didn't want to be picked up.

It took almost 3 hours to catch 4 female chihuahua mixes, 4 males and 7 puppies. The mother dogs had dug a deep hole under the cement patio about 6 inches in diameter. The puppies (who we think are about 4 to 5 weeks old) were packed inside and not easily accessible.

In the very corner of the yard was a large, old dog chained to the wall. He had broken free from his collar so the family used phone cords to secure the heavy, metal chain around his neck. The dog, who we named "Sam", had severe fly strike on his ears, scabs on his hind legs and sides from sleeping on concrete and was extremely malnourished. The family said they kept him chained up as a guard dog and also to keep him from hurting the little dogs. We approached him with caution, but he was eager to get to know us and came out of hiding for treats and love. He pushed his big head into our hands and we all instantly fell in love with him. We knew that we needed to save him too.

After a lot of convincing, the family finally agreed to let us take Sam. In all, we brought back 16 dogs (this includes the 7 puppies). One of the other females looks to be pregnant too and will be verified with an ultrasound.  UPDATE. She's pregnant!

Upon returning to the C.A.R.L. sanctuary, all of the dogs were situated with comfy beds, food and fresh water. Next, in a few days, they would all go to vets for care. The two moms with puppies are in a temporary foster home of a volunteer. They were covered from head to toe in fleas and ticks. Each puppy had at least 8 ticks on them. Several have skin infections that need immediate treatment.

Tues, May 26 - Mom's Poppy and Myrtle, with their puppies are being fostered with volunteer Lynne. Lily, the black Chihuahua, is pregnant and being fostered by volunteer Paula, during the pregnancy. Can't determine which pups go to which mom! Moms are co-parenting and pups are accepting. They are all infested with fleas, ticks and need to be dewormed. Of course, they will all need to be spayed or neutered and micro-chipped. Thanks to volunteers Ellen, Ayla, Chrissy, Marsha and Mary M. for helping out with mom and pups from taking off ticks, bathing pups, dropping off supplies, picking up supplies, giving meds, cleaning up mounds of poop, etc. Volunteers Alison and Terry, were also removing ticks and giving vaccinations.

People are hearing about the "South Central 16 Dogs" on Facebook and Instagram now. And are interested in fostering or adopting. Donations are coming in for their treatments. Kacey Montoya, KTLA reporter, is the founder of Fix n Fidos. She started a nonprofit called Fix’n Fidos to raise money to pay for spay and neuter surgeries for low-income residents of Southern California. We want to educate pet owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets and help those who cannot afford it.  After seeing volunteer Talisa's post on the C.A.R.L. Instagram, Kacey of Fix n Fidos is now donating to C.A.R.L. to pay for some of the spay/neuter expenses.

Wed, May 27 - The two mothers Poppy and Myrtle were taken by volunteers Ellen and Lynne to Mission Hospital, in Ventura for checkups and treatment. They had ticks removed. Dr. Bennett  gave the moms Revolution and rabies. He dewormed Poppy, the red mom for free. He said the puppies have had stress, fleas, ticks and all of that can cause the scabs. He believes that now that they are cleaned up and dewormed, we should start seeing significant improvement. He believes Moms, Poppy and Myrtle are about 3 years old. He said to keep removing all ticks that we can. We will continue to bathe the puppies every few days with dish soap. The little specks that we thought were fleas were actually baby ticks. He said he thinks both mom's are probably borderline anemic, but should bounce back with good food and insect removal.

Thurs, May 28 - Volunteers, Alison, Kristin, Jim and Terry were busy with tick removal and socialization of the adult dogs. Some of them are showing signs of abuse.

Mon, June 1 - UPDATE! At 5:30am C.A.R.L. volunteer, Paula who is fostering Lily, the pregnant Chihuahua notified that Lily's water had broke and she was in labor. No further details at this time. By the time you read this, there may be a plus one to the sixteen!

Tues, June 2 - C.A.R.L. volunteer, Marion is fostering Chiquita. Says "new foster Chiquita is so scared, at least she does know me as someone who throws treats and does not ask her to do anything. She did not come out of her crate, I have her in a fenced in area to decompress. I checked on her around midnight, she had come out to eat and when she heard me she ran into the bigger wire crate I have set up for her. It will take time but once she comes out of her fear, she will be an awesome girl."  Lucky Chiquita to be in Marion's care!
