COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 Biobank Helps Researchers Share Patients’ Samples

With funding from the Mangurian Foundation, the UR CTSI and URMC Shared Resource Labs have developed a dedicated biorepository that will safely collect and store blood samples from COVID-19 patients and link them with patients’ de-identified clinical data. This dedicated biorepository will allow researchers to access serum, plasma and immune cells to help them test ways to improve screening for COVID-19 and better understand how new treatments impact the immune response. Read the full story in the UR CTSI Stories Blog.

UR Shares Dr. Chatbot Technology with Nation's Employers

Employers across the country can advance reopening efforts with technology developed by the University of Rochester to check employees for potential COVID-19 symptoms before they report to work each day. Software code at the heart of Dr. Chatbot, a screening tool first created for internal use among health care workers at URMC, is now available free as open-source software. Read more in the URMC Newsroom.

CHeT Talks with Senator Tom Daschle
Join Ray Dorsey, M.D., director of the University of Rochester's Center for Health + Technology, for a live Zoom interview with Senator Tom Daschle, former Senate Majority Leader, founder and chief executive officer of The Daschle Group, about his blueprint for health reform, including the need for home- and community-based care to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Register now.
Date: Tuesday, June 16
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm

New COVID-19 Funding Opportunities
  • The National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities will soon solicit research to evaluate community interventions testing 1) the impacts of mitigation strategies to prevent COVID-19 transmission in health disparity populations and other vulnerable groups; and 2)  interventions to address the adverse psychosocial, sociocultural, behavioral, and socioeconomic consequences of the pandemic on the health of these groups. First application due date: Wednesday, July 22.
  • The National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) are offering two funding opportunities (RFA-CA-20-038) and (RFA-CA-20-039) to establish Serological Sciences Research Projects with the goals of identifying and advancing research opportunities to characterize the immune responses elicited by SARS-CoV-2 viral infection; understanding the mechanisms driving the serological, humoral and cellular immune responses; determining host, genetic and environmental modifiers of the immune response; determining the serological correlates of disease pathogenesis and protection against future infection; and defining access, communication, and implementation barriers related to SARS-CoV-2 serological testing. Apply by Wednesday, July 22.
  • NIH will soon offer four funding opportunities as part of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) initiative, a $500 million initiative to reduce COVID-19 associated morbidity and mortality disparities for vulnerable and underserved populations that are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Applications will be accepted through Monday, August 31.
 Expiring Deadlines for COVID-19 Funding
  • NIAID is soliciting research applications for milestone-driven projects focused on preclinical development of candidate therapeutics, vaccines and related countermeasures against select emerging infectious diseases and pathogens. Applications must include a product development strategy and demonstrate investment by at least one industrial participant. Apply by Monday, June 29.
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides support for innovation in rapid and accurate patient testing for 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and other diagnostic solutions to mitigate future outbreaks through its Diagnostic Development Initiative. AWS is offering technical support and providing promotional credits to support the use of their services to advance diagnostic research for selected institutions and companies. Apply by Tuesday, June 30.

UR/URMC Join Declaration That ‘Racism is a Public Health Crisis’

UR and URMC have joined other community organizations and leaders to support the Greater Rochester Black Agenda Group in declaring that racism is a public health crisis. "As we join this declaration, we acknowledge past failures in our obligation to fight racism—as a public health advocate, an academic institution, and an employer. We can and will do better by working together with communities of color."
Read the full declaration from the Black Agenda Group, as well as affirmations from the medical center and university.

University of Rochester Anti-Racist Resources

Anti-racism work is an ongoing, everyday process of active listening, learning and allyship. UR has a list of educational and actionable resources that provide general information and a starting point to learn about anti-racism, inclusion and privilege. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a good place to start.

Webinar: Racism, Police Brutality and Health

NIH, CDC Offer Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health Research

The NIH and the CDC are offering administrative supplements to enhance the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, postdocs and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those who are underrepresented in health research. This opportunity is also available to principle investigators of research grants who are or become disabled and need additional support to accommodate their disability in order to continue their existing research projects. The supplements must support work within the scope of the original projects and are only available for parent grants with certain activity codes. Submission dates vary awarding institute or center.
