District Insights: Schools Are Not Closed

If you or someone you know works in public education, then you know our schools are not truly closed. Our buildings and grounds are closed, but our schools are still operating to provide distance learning, student mealschild care for essential workers and other support on a daily basis.

To say this spring has been challenging for K-12 schools would be a major understatement. When the Hudson City School District announced the shift to distance learning in mid-March, we had less than 48 hours to put plans in motion. We knew the challenges we would face in ensuring every student has access to meals and the resources they need to engage in meaningful learning at home.

Since March, more than 1,000 laptop devices were provided for K-12 students to use at home. To ensure equitable access, the District also developed plans to help student households without internet to get free or affordable Wi-Fi access through local carriers or mobile hotspots. We also distributed an average of 4,300 student meals each week.

VIDEO: Bluehawk Pizzas

M.C. Smith Elementary School delivered 261 pizzas to PK-5 students to celebrate their hard work and engagement in online learning! Teachers and administrators used their own money and donations to purchase the pizzas. On June 8 and 9, the pizzas were delivered to student homes by Superintendent Suttmeier, Mayor Kamal Johnson, and MCSES teachers and principals. The Bluehawk mascot also joined a few deliveries! Watch the video here.

We are extremely proud of all the hard work our students and families have put in to continue learning at home. Special thanks to the MCSES administrative assistants who collaborated on creating delivery routes and helping coordinate the deliveries. Read more on our website.

"An evocative, atmospheric tale that makes you believe in the merging of dreams, imagination, and the shadowy woods that entrance its narrator.")

NON-FICTION 3rd Place - "Borsa" by Rida Farzana ("Great subject matter, attention to detail, authenticity and great potential.")

5th Graders Moving Up

Photos of our fifth grade students are on display in the window of CVS in downtown Hudson (617 Warren St). It is not our typical way of celebrating our fifth graders moving up to the Junior High School but their teachers and principals wanted to find some way to say congratulations and give recognition. Way to go, 5th Grade, we are proud of you!

K-12 Virtual Art Show

The Art Department presents this year’s K-12 Art Exhibition in a virtual gallery to showcase the different art work our students experience and create each year! The exhibit includes artwork from students in K-12, including the one pictured here. You can explore each room in this virtual gallery by clicking the floor to move. You can also rotate around to get a 360-degree view. When you see a piece of art you are interested in viewing closer, click on it and the show will take you there directly. Earth Day Projects

For Earth Day this year, fifth grade students completed projects at home where they used recycled items to create something new. They had so much creativity!

Illustrated Haikus

Hudson Junior High School students created illustrated haikus for Mr. Peters' Art class as well as some other projects. We're seriously impressed with the insight and honesty they brought to their poems.

Check out more of their artwork on our website.

Using Math in Design

While learning at home, sixth graders in Mrs. Burt’s STEAM* class designed their dream bedrooms and liked it so much they asked to design a living room too. Based on specified engineering design constraints, students designed their floor plans using geometric shapes, units of measure, and calculated area. They also went "shopping" for paint, flooring, furniture, and decor and practiced multiplying, adding, and subtracting with decimals to keep track of their budgets.

Online Band Practice

Fourth and fifth grade Band continues, even at home! Mrs. Phillips holds band chats where they talk about assignments from their lesson books, sheet music and vocabulary. They also play their instruments and even tried to play a song together!

If you have a student entering Grades 4 or 5 who is interested in playing an instrument next year, visit our website for band sign-up information.
