LWDA/EDD Benefits Update for 06.09.20

California Labor Secretary Julie A. Su and Employment Development Department Spokesperson Loree Levy provided an update on unemployment benefits. They covered what pending means on an unemployment insurance claim, guided those who have served their penalty weeks, discussed new communications resources, and explained what to do if you are returning to work. Latina Action Day Session 3: California’s Economic & Workforce Recovery

Secretary Su joined the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes Castro, Assemblymember Monique Limón, Elaine Trevino who are all on Governor Newsom's task force on Business and Jobs Recovery. Dunia Elvir, from Telemundo 52 Los Angeles, moderated a discussion on their insight and commitment to supporting Latinas in California's workforce & economic recovery/response to COVID-19. Unemployment benefits top $26 billion during course of the pandemic
Demand for unemployment benefits in California continues to grow with another 329,289 claims processed last week between regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) and the separate Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program. According to the latest data from the Employment Development Department (EDD), the overall total of claims processed since the COVID-19 impact began in mid-March is now over 6 million and $26.2 billion in benefits have been paid to workers in need. EDD awards $1.35 million to provide training and job opportunities for English language learners
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today that it has awarded $1.35 million to four Local Workforce Development Boards (Local Board) to implement an English Language Learners (ELL) Pathways to Careers program. These projects will provide 460 ELL participants with increased access to effective training models, supportive services, and incorporate innovative employment strategies with partners to create career opportunities in growing industries.
