Coronavirus Concerns? Consider Past Health Crises

During the last week of February 2020, the S&P 500 lost 11.49% — the worst week for stocks since the 2008 financial crisis — only to jump by 4.6% on the first Monday in March. By all accounts, the drop was largely driven by ever-increasing fears about the potential effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and its ultimate impact on the global economy. Although many market observers contend that the market was overvalued and due for a correction anyway, the unpredictability, strength, and suddenness of the historic tumble was unnerving for even the most seasoned investors. If recent volatility is causing you to consider cashing out of your stock holdings, it may be worthwhile to pause and put recent events into perspective, using history as a guide.

American Savings Bank Rates as of June 7, 2020

On Friday June 5th the jobs report was released for May and there was an estimated 2.5 million increase in employment. There is confusion on how this number was reported as the expectation was for an 8.5 million decrease in employment due to COVID-19, however, the stock market rallied significantly as the belief in a “V-SHAPE” recovery is moving more investment into the market and pulling investors away from safe haven investments such as bonds. Mortgages are bonds so if the market continues to rally we will start to see interest rates creep up so we may have seen a bottom in rates if the market continues this trend. Please note that even a rate in the 3s is fantastic so overall rates are still excellent!
