Friday Notice 12 June 2020

What's happening during Term 2:

June:

17 Wednesday: Committee Meeting @ 7pm

A REMINDER: Please do not bring nuts or any nut products into the school classrooms or grounds. We have some children who have life-threatening allergies to nuts.

TOYS, DEVICES, JEWELLERY & TRINKETS: A reminder that children are not to bring any of these items  to school. We seem to have an outbreak at school at the moment and they are a bit contagious and very distracting! Also much angst is often caused when precious things get lost so they are best kept at home.

* New Play equipment will be available from Monday *

Student Forum met, for the first time this term, last Wednesday to discuss how we can best manage our safe and fair access to the new play equipment which is getting very close to being finished as I write. It will be finished to practical completion by the end of today as promised. The excitement is mounting and our student representatives had some good ideas about allocating specific break times to specific classes so that everyone will get access without causing unnecessary risk to anyone else. Importantly they decided that it would not be wise to allow chasings on the equipment because children will still be working out what they can and cannot manage safely; the last thing they need as they are learning to manage risk like this is someone chasing them and forcing them to make rushed and possibly bad decisions. We will explain to children on Monday which classes can play when on the equipment for the next little while until the novelty wears off. The equipment originally grew out of a need to stretch our older children, the Biggies, and so it was sometimes referred to as ‘the Biggies play equipment’. It will not be solely for their use but it has been designed to suit older children rather than younger children. There will be parts of it that will be inaccessible to younger, shorter children, but they will grow into it just like they eventually manage to get into the peppercorn tree without anyone helping them.

Thanks to those families who are continuing to do their Family Jobs outside school grounds or outside school hours. Your contribution is much appreciated.

Phys Ed with Owen

It has been fantastic to see students back in action in our P.E classes over the past three weeks. The colder weather hasn’t stopped their enthusiasm or energy. A big thank you to everyone who participated and supported the at home P.E lessons during lockdown. It was great seeing all the fun and creative ways students were keeping active.

Our Prep and 1/2 classes are working hard on their fundamental motor skills with a focus on jumping, leaping, galloping & skipping. We have been playing lots of games that integrate these skills and provide opportunities for practice and refinement. We have also been looking at the animal kingdom to see how different creatures move and how we can replicate that in our own movements.

The Biggies first lesson back included students learning and then creating their own Haka. Our upper primary classes have started a major unit on invasion sports. Students have been looking at the shared skills and tactics that sports like soccer, football, basketball and many others share. Our big focusing over the past two weeks has been how to create and move into ’space’ when attacking. There has been some big learning leaps in thinking during these sessions with students realising that you don’t always have to move forward to attack.

Next term is shaping up to be very exciting for P.E. We are planning on returning to the Eastside Activity Centre for a range of gymnastics activities early in the term. Our back half of the term will focusing on circus skills and activities. We are also looking to find a new date for our learn to swim program in ether term 3 or 4, pending current safety advice and the lifting of restrictions.
