THE YEAR WE WANT TO FORGET!
By:  Dennis L. Speigel - Founder & CEO, ITPS

Best said, 2020 thus far is the year everyone wants to forget!  Who could have ever foretold  the crazy events we have had to endure.  I told the news media this week that 2020 is like the office building that does not show a 13th floor in the elevator.  12 x 14.  No number 13.  Well, on the calendars, we should remove 2020 and skip directly to 2021!

Whether we want it or not, the remnants of 2020 are going to be with us for quite some time.  Looking at the opening schedules for the theme / water parks this summer, it appears that approximately 40% of the typical operating season has disappeared.

It was interesting to see that Cedar Fair, one of our leaders in the industry, has originated a staggered opening schedule for their Kings Island visitors.  On July 2, season pass holders will be welcomed back, and the general public on July 22, roughly a 3-week gap between passholders and the regular general public quite a gap.

Using Cedar Fair further as a bell weather for a company with multiple parks and the need to get open as soon and reasonably as possible.  I was first alerted that Canada’s Wonderland, Toronto, and Kings Dominion in Richmond, Virginia, are still uncertain of opening dates.  Carowinds, located on the state lines of North and South Carolina, may possibly be able to open by the end of August!!  Not because of Cedar Fair, but because of a state line that goes through the middle of Carowinds.   Two different states with different laws.

I was part of the team that bought Carowinds from Duke Power & Light in 1973.  We thought the state line issue, as did the developer E. Pat Hall, was a great marketing opportunity.  It still may be, but for opening date issues, it still has its bi-lateral impact 47 years later.

The long and the short of this piece is, each company operating theme parks, water parks, etc. is going to be dealing with their own “local issues” governed by the state or province in which they are located.  This creates enormous uncertainty in the Covid-19 process with which operators must work and wade through, it is uncharted territory. We have a lot to learn and implement.

We are a long way from knowing the impact of Corona on 2020.  As for me, the elevator is departing 2019.  I’m getting off at the next floor – 2021!

2.  San Antonio theme parks, hotels begin reopening

San Antonio’s tourism and hospitality industry, decimated by monthslong closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, is starting to claw its way back as major hotels, theme parks and other attractions announce plans to cautiously reopen.

One industry insider expects the bevvy of safety measures to remain in place into the near future. The U.S. still is in the midst of a pandemic, and a vaccine has not yet been developed.  “This is the new normal for at least the next two years,” said Dennis Speigel, founder and CEO of Ohio-based consulting firm International Theme Park Services.  It’s too early to tell how the season will play out. Parks are slowly bringing back employees and limiting guest capacity.

When it reopens Thursday after a three-month shutdown, SeaWorld Orlando will cap attendance at about one-third capacity and run on a five day a week calendar to give employees more time to clean, the company’s interim CEO Marc Swanson said.

4.  There’s no telling the future for the theme park industry

When will people feel safe going to Disneyland again? Or getting on an airplane? Or staying in a hotel? As the travel industry prepares to reopen, these are the billion dollar questions that will determine whether the industry recovers quickly … or faces a years-long slump.

Early signs are not encouraging for a quick recovery. Universal’s theme parks in Orlando have reopened, and initial crowds were not, well, crowds. Social distancing was no problem as only a small fraction of the number of visitors who typically would crowd the parks in early June turned out during their reopening weekend.

Cedar Point will announce later when it will resume daily ticket sales.
helma & Boom and ITPS announce collaboration in  innovative planning solutions for the changing leisure industry

Thelma & Boom, Inc. (TB), a theme park and entertainment design team based in California, USA, and International Theme Park Services, Inc. (ITPS), a leading leisure and attractions consultant based in Ohio, USA,  announced today a collaborative effort on an exciting new design approach and innovative process that meets the  new restrictions of remote collaborative efforts between clients, creative and technical teams.

TB and ITPS have worked extensively for many years with international clients, design firms and local A/E groups which, until recently, have followed the traditional AIA or REBA design guidelines and phasing for the design development of theme parks and entertainment venues.  However, as the culture of Theme Park Design evolves, the needs of international clients are no longer met by these traditional guidelines developed by the Architecture and Engineering Industries.  Theme Park and Amusement Design is a unique world that needs new ways to achieve the most efficient collaboration efforts between the creative and technical development within different cultures, often separated by oceans and long distances.
