Unraveling the Mysteries of Asteroids

Associate Professor Christine Hartzell is a participating scientist on the NASA OSIRIS-REx research team, and she was part of recent efforts to understand puzzling new particle ejection behavior being observed in Asteroid Bennu.

DEPARTMENT NEWS

Engineering Robotic Starfish

Professor Derek Paley and colleagues are working to create soft underwater robot appendages that mimic the behavior of sea stars, brittle stars, and basket stars. Paley envisions robotic starfish operating in groups, creating sensor networks that could explore inaccessible parts of the ocean.

Two UMD Teams Selected for 2021 NASA M2M X-Hab Challenge

On June 11, NASA announced that two UMD teams were selected for the 2021 Moon to Mars eXploration Systems and Habitation Academic Innovation Challenge.

The teams will include students at all levels from freshman in Aerospace Engineering’s ENAE100 introductory seminar course to graduate students.

UMD Student Team Advances in UAS Competition


Stage 1 results in the NIST-sponsored First Responder UAS Endurance Challenge have been announced—and a team of UMD aerospace engineering students is one of ten winners.
