Science from a Distance!
We will be hosting online via Zoom June 23-25, 2020 from 9am - 3:30pm each day!
Topics covered include monarchs, seed dispersal, climate science, nature journaling, mapping by hand and GIS and more.  We'll also participate in a live Bird of Prey program webinar provided by the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary.  There will be two interactive sessions that we need your help in creating, see the next section of this newsletter for details.

Stipends are available for K-12 classroom teachers for each full day of participation.
SCECHs are not available.

The workshop will be coordinated by the summer 2020 Science Education and Outreach Fellows, Lindsey Kemmerling and Kyle Jaynes.

Help needed with Interactive Sessions

1. Share Out about Distance Teaching: Stories and Resources (Tuesday, June 23 at 2pm)

Presenters needed!  email KaraHaas@msu.edu if you are willing to share!

This spring was something none of us were prepared for.  It became an opportunity to learn a lot about myself and find creative ways to accomplish my job.  I know you have been in similar situations!  This session will honor the struggles and triumphs and allow us to learn from each other.

Do you have a resource that you utilized this spring that was helpful?  Are you willing to share an experience that you learned from?  If so, would you please send Kara Haas an email with the subject 'Distance teaching stories'.  I'll share a google slide show that you can add slides to help you share your story.  I'm looking for about five different stories/resources and for a max. of 10 minutes for each person to share.  Thank you!

2. Group Brainstorm: Resources for Summer Learning

Inspired by the group brainstorming at last year's WMU hosted 'TeachStock', during this session we will gather in three breakout rooms to brainstorm resources.  In your summer institute registration you will be asked to choose one of the topic areas below.  I share them now so you can start thinking about books, podcasts, websites, etc. related to the topic that you would recommend or 'have always wanted to spend time on'!

  1. Authentic science experiences, including citizen/community science

  2. Project-based learning

  3. Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the classroom

Informal Science Educators - Survey Request

Hello, I'm Eleanor Kenimer and I am a Graduate Student Assistant on an NSF DRK-12 funded research project with Dr. Gail Richmond at MSU called Teaching Science Outdoors - Urban Partnerships. We are conducting a small study to learn more about the work that professionals engaged in informal science education efforts do with science teachers and what guides this work.

If you or anyone you know is an informal science educator in Michigan, please consider helping us out and taking the survey linked below. It should not take more than about 15 minutes of your time. We would also love to follow up with any interested individuals with a short interview. If you are interested in talking with us, there is a place to include your contact information at the end of the survey. Your identity will remain anonymous unless you provide this contact information. Feel free to forward to other Michigan informal science educators. This is not limited to outdoor or environmental educators, but museum educators, aquarium educators, etc. are welcome to participate as well.

Updates from KBS

  • Covid-19 Update

In cooperation with Governor Whitmer’s executive order, and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we’ve canceled or postponed in-person events across all of KBS indefinitely.  Details on the Covid-19 Crisis from Michigan State University.

  • Addressing systemic racism

We acknowledge the ongoing protests against police brutality due to the most recent high-profile police and civilian murders of black Americans – the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, and systemic racism. We as people and an institution denounce racism, bigotry, and hate in all forms and strive for equity and inclusion in all of our spaces. It is imperative that the KBS community and our K-12 partners educate ourselves on issues of racial injustice and engage in work that promotes progress. We have been inspired by science Twitter and events like #BlackBirdersWeek, but we must work to create sustained, transformative change.  During our Summer Institute we will share resources and support each other in learning more.

Summer is here!

We hope you have some relaxing moments in your summer!  We look forward to 'seeing' you at any of our programs.  Questions?  Email k12partnership@kbs.msu.edu to reach all of us!

Be well.

Kara, Misty, Lindsey and Kyle
