How to be a Family
by Dan Kois
and The Enchanted Hour
by Meghan Cox Gurdon,
both read by the authors
I tend to shy away from audio books read by the author, but here are two titles whose subject matter sounded so interesting that I could not resist. As an added bonus, they were perfectly read by their respective authors.
In "How to be a Family", Dan Kois examined his family life with his wife and two daughters. He found it sadly lacking. Like many of us, he struggled with the fact that family meals are a rarity and that his daughters used their technical devices way too much. After serious contemplation and number-crunching, he and his wife decided to take off for one year and move their family around the globe. They spent three months each in New Zealand, Costa Rica, The Netherlands and Kansas.
This audio book was extremely entertaining. Granted, the step the author took to gain more family time might have been somewhat drastic. The benefits, however, outweighed it all for the author and his family. Read engagingly with humor and self-deprecation, Mr. Kois includes small chapters written and read by his wife and his daughters. This added a personal and very honest touch to this book.
In his book, Dan Kois refers to "The Enchanted Hour." I always like it when authors quote or mention books I have read. It seems like you meet an old friend within the pages of a new friend.

In “The Enchanted Hour”, Meghan Cox Gurdon advocates the importance of reading to your children. What impressed me most was her approach that what you read ranks second to the fact THAT you read together as a family. Meghan Cox Gurdon says that even if you read books way above a child's level of understanding, there will still be benefits. The time spent together and the complete attention a caregiver gives to children while reading to them outweigh the content of what is being read. She argues that if children are introduced to some of the classics at an early age, once they roll around to high school, there won't be moaning and groaning, but only the pleasant memory of cuddling in a caregiver's arms while listening to the book. By the by, TDL owns a great series of Board Books, called BabyLit, which adapts classic novels for toddlers.
The common thread that ties these two titles together is the importance of putting away our technical devices and spending time together; if it is with a beloved book, even better. So to my future grandchildren I say: Buckle down, little ones, we are reading Moby Dick!
TDL owns both titles in audio and print.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes
on the grass under trees on a summer’s day,
listening to the murmur of the water,
or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time.”
