1. Catholic fraternal groups call for prayer and justice amid George Floyd protests

(CNA).- The Knights of Columbus have announced a forthcoming novena for an end to racism, as Catholic fraternal organizations urge prayer and justice amid burgeoning civic unrest that began with the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed while being arrested May 25.

“George Floyd was a man, a human, a being. Not a stat. Not just another one. Not to be forgotten,” the Knights of Peter Claver, a traditionally black Catholic fraternal organization, said in a statement released last week.

“The Knights of Peter Claver condemns the senseless death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis policemen. There is no explanation to justify the actions taken by the police that ultimately led to Mr. Floyd’s demise. We pray that God will grant his family peace and that the Minneapolis community finds healing during this difficult period.”

The group called for “true respect of the Dignity of Black Lives. These statements should not have to be made. These demands should not have to be made. These lives should not be lost.” MORE

2. ‘AKA Jane Roe’: Norma McCorvey’s longtime friends set the record straight
(LiveAction) - For over a decade, Norma McCorvey (a.k.a. “Jane Roe” of the landmark 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in the United States) worked to convince the Supreme Court to take her new case, McCorvey v. Hill—a case she hoped would undo the decision that bore her name. As the new documentary, “AKA Jane Roe,” nears its May 22nd debut on FX and Hulu, the decades-long fight to undo legalized abortion is coming under fire, with filmmakers attempting to rewrite history. Filmmaker Nick Sweeney is selling his version of McCorvey’s life as “the real story,” though he spent what amounts to brief time with her in 2016, a few months before her death in February 2017. She had been ill for many years and was battling COPD when she allegedly told Sweeney that she sometimes felt used by the pro-life movement to advance its cause. “I was the big fish,” she allegedly says in the film, along with a purported “deathbed confession” that her work for the pro-life movement was “all an act.” MORE

3. Which COVID-19 vaccines are being developed with fetal cell lines derived from aborted babies?
(PRI) - The race is on to find a vaccine for COVID-19. The good news is that many of the world’s largest vaccine companies are developing promising vaccine candidates using ethically-derived cells. The bad news is that many of the leading vaccine candidates for the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) are being developed using fetal cell lines that were originally derived from the tissues of aborted babies in the 1970s and 80s. With more than 6.2 million reported cases so far and more than 375,000 deaths worldwide, the burden of disease from the 2019 novel coronavirus continues to mount. And so does the urgency to find a cure. From big pharma to small biotech companies and universities, researchers have been pushing out dozens of vaccine candidates and have fast-tracked promising vaccine candidates to clinical trials in record time. Pharmaceutical companies are sprinting to have a vaccine ready by the end of the year or by early 2021. MORE

4. Court Rules Doctors Can Euthanize Patient They Think Would Rather Die Than Stay Alive
(LifeNews) - A 34-year-old patient in a coma may be denied food and water, a UK High Court judge has ruled, stating that it is in the patient’s “best interests”. Dr Anthony McCarthy, of Bios Centre, London, responded to the decision, saying that it “builds on, and goes beyond, all that is wrong with current law and medical guidance on the treatment of those currently unable to make decisions”.
The patient, referred to as MSP, currently being kept in an artificial coma, is suffering from a treatable bowel condition. The treatment, in his case, is a stoma, an opening on the abdomen allowing for the evacuation of human waste into a colostomy bag. Although the procedure was intended to be temporary, following an attempt at corrective surgery the doctors concluded that the stoma must be permanent. However, the patient had previously indicated that he thought that his life would not be worth living should the stoma remain, believing that he would be unable to find a job and find a romantic partner in such a condition. 5. The Fate of the First Amendment Will Be Decided By These Nine Cases
(Crisis) - This month the Little Sisters of the Poor returned to the U.S. Supreme Court, once again defending their right to practice the Catholic Faith by refusing to provide for contraceptives in their health insurance plan. This is a stark reminder that even years later the Obama administration’s assault on religious freedom continues to impact religious organizations. And other serious threats have since emerged. Catholic educators especially are nervously awaiting court rulings that could have a severe impact on schools and colleges. That’s scary, but it’s also true that each case presents a new opportunity to re-establish the rights of religious educators under the First Amendment, should judges be so inclined. Now is a great time for your prayers. MORE

Rooted in Love

The arch is one of the strongest of structures, but, ironically, an arch is formed by two pillars leaning in towards each other. Likewise, If a married couple can learn to depend on each other, they can withstand a lot. If God is their keystone at the top of the arch, anything is possible. But especially right now in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, our marriages need “arch support.”

Dr. Jim Healy, a veteran family life minister, has created very short 3-minute videos that deal directly with the challenges our couples are facing. Watch his videos here.

LIFE HAS PURPOSE: Podcast #8: #BlackLivesMatter And What We Need To Know
(LHP) - Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X both fought for racial justice. Both had radically different approaches to how that could be achieved. MLK believed in non-violence. Malcolm X believed in violence “by any means necessary.” King promoted a Gospel-centered approach. Malcolm X promoted an unbiblical one. As Christians who are to seek the truth that sets us free, what IS the #BlackLivesMatter movement’s approach? There can be no justice without righteousness; they both form the foundation of God’s throne (Psalm 89:14). This show is a must-hear for everyone who is called as an ambassador of Christ. Who are we representing? LISTEN

Research aims to quantify and explain drop in US religiosity
(CNA).- The current drop in the number of people in the United States identifying with a religion may not be permanent, but it is in some ways unprecedented, according to a new research study aiming to quantify the drop in religiosity the United States has experienced over the past several decades. “Fewer people claim to be or identify as part of a religious community of any kind,” researcher Lyman Stone wrote in an April 2020 study by the American Enterprise Institute. Rasmussen poll offers encouraging news on protection for abortion survivors, details public’s misunderstanding about Roe v. Wade
(NRLC) - As someone who has done his small part in trying to educate the American public, I genuinely appreciate a good headline that captures 46 years of misunderstanding. Recently Rasmussen Reports ran a story headlined,”FEW VOTERS UNDERSTAND ROE V WADE RULING; OR WHAT OVERTURNING IT WOULD MEAN.” Here are four important bullet points... MORE

The pro-choice view survives on widespread ignorance of biology
(Secular Pro-Life) Through Secular Pro-life I frequently post content about how the human zygote is the first stage of a human being’s life cycle. Often when I point this fact out, people will suggest I’m strawmanning the pro-choice view. They assert that no one really denies the basic biology; the important issues to the abortion debate are personhood [i.e. yes the fetus is biologically human but is she philosophically a “person”?] and bodily rights. Two Visits to the House of Slaves
(TCT) - Pope John Paul II visited the Maison des Esclaves, the “House of Slaves,” on the island of Gorée off the coast of Senegal in 1992. And President Obama visited it as well in 2013, over thirty years later.  What did each say, and what does the difference tell us? MORE
