The Highland West Civic Association is now in The Giving Store of The Columbus Foundation! The Giving Store at Columbusfoundation.org is a one-stop shop for effective and easy philanthropy of any kind. The HWCA was founded in 2006 with the purpose of improving the viability, livability, and overall quality of life for the residents of the Highland West community in the northeast quadrant of the Hilltop by:
- Engaging our residents, keeping them informed, and representing them in front of governmental bodies, regarding issues of interest to our residents, building community, fostering acceptance, and creating an environment of mutual respect.
- Promoting a clean community by organizing neighborhood clean ups, teaching and empowering residents to do the same, establishing community pride and personal responsibility.
- Promoting decent living conditions for all our residents and informing our residents as to available resources to assist in the upkeep of their property.
- Promoting home ownership in the Highland West area for people of all income levels.
You might know us by some of our major accomplishments and things we are currently working on. The HWCA was instrumental in beginning the clean up of Holton and Glenview Parks on the northern edge of our community. We used our influence to bring about the construction of the new recreation center at Glenwood Park and continue to advocate to clear out the lower level of the park restoring it to the community. In 2012 we raised money locally to line Broad Street with community banners from Glenwood Park to Hague Avenue. We organize quarterly clean ups for West Broad Street from Glenwood Park to Hague Avenue. We own and maintain the Highland West Gardens at 29 N. Wheatland Avenue, giving our residents the opportunity to garden with us; soon it will be home to a new stage so we can put on programs for children and adults, not to mention give the community a new concert venue. We also maintain the plantings along West Broad Street in Glenwood Park, creating a colorful entrance marker for not only the Highland West community, but for all the neighborhoods to the west along Broad Street as well. And this is only a few of the things we have done and are currently involved ... there are many more.
