CFHL, UCCE Shasta Cluster: Keeping Physical Activity and Garden-Enhanced Learning on Everyone’s Mind during Shelter-In Place!

  • In Northern California’s rural Trinity County, schools contacted CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE (CFHL, UCCE) Trinity County and the Local Health Department (LHD) to assist them in developing physical activity materials for students and families abiding by the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders. In response to this request, the LHD offered seeds and gardening resources; CFHL, UCCE Trinity County provided CATCH at Home resources, Physical Activity Calendars, Jump Ropes and Activity Cards to approximately 500 students. Although safe drop-off of materials did not allow for direct contact, school administrators expressed their appreciation, noting that students were very excited to have jump ropes and activities to keep them active at home!
  • Shasta County schools had an interest in providing garden resources and seeds to their students for home herb gardens given their inability to access school gardens. In response, the Program distributed Harvest of the Month handouts and a total of 700 seed packets to two K-8th grade schools. “Home gardens became a hit while there was a shelter-in-place order all over our county” according to Shawnice Sellers, CFHL, UCCE Shasta Cluster Program Supervisor.

CFHL, UCCE Kern County: Maintaining 103 Site Partnerships

  • CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE Kern County has maintained local partner relationships during the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders by providing all 103 sites with a variety of nutrition and physical activity online resources and offering ongoing technical assistance.
  • In addition, the Program continues to support adult SNAP-Ed eligible audiences by offering the UCCE Connects to You (a.k.a. 100% at Home) curriculum and EatFresh.org modules. In the short time of sharing adult classes online, one participant completed all fifteen nutrition modules from Eatfresh.org. and noted: “I’m glad I took the class, it served as a good refresher and has helped me become more active and energized. During work time I randomly do squats to keep me active!”

CFHL, UCCE Imperial County Pilots Lesson and Looks to the Future of Online Delivery in Remote, Rural Areas

  • CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE Imperial County collaboratively structured an online lesson pilot from the My Amazing Body curriculum in March with Special Day Class teacher Carmen Hernandez at De Anza Magnet Elementary School. Mrs. Hernandez expressed interest in the 30 minute interactive online lesson after the COVID pandemic stimulated the closure of schools. This was the first online nutrition education class in the county. “It was something different and I want to do it again. Students loved it!” said Mrs. Hernandez.
  • My Amazing Body, Lesson 3 “Germs are not for Sharing” which highlights hand washing/hygiene, getting enough sleep, eating right, and being physically active to stay healthy was pilot tested with 16 third and fourth grade students. “This pilot was the first strategic approach to direct education delivery online for our program following school closures. It illustrates how online delivery can be a tool to not only reach current students, but also potentially expand programmatic delivery in environments with high numbers of SNAP-Ed eligible populations that may otherwise not be served due to limited staffing.” states Paul Tabarez, Program Supervisor, CFHL, UCCE Imperial County.
