Change is Part of Nature

Know that change is a part of nature. Things will always come and go, join and separate, make again and break again. Daily you see that. The sun rises and sets. Day turns into night, night turns into day. Remember, even when there have been catastrophes, this world has still gone on. And it still continues.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.”  Sri Swami Satchidananda

Anger as a Tool for Change
By Swami Satchidananda

If you need to correct somebody’s behavior, to get them to stop some negative action, you may have to use anger. By doing that, you are “punishing” their mistakes, but you are not punishing the person. You are not hating them. It’s like the child in a classroom, who makes some mistake and the teacher corrects them. Is the teacher hating the child? No. They are correcting the child out of love. Anger is a good tool if you can keep it in the pocket, pull it out and use it when you want to, but not really get angry. You can use anger.  MORE

It occurred to me that Restorative Yoga might also be useful as a therapeutic practice to heal race-based traumatic stress injury. I share stories in my book about the emotionally harmful impact of race related events that have occurred within the US, including Yoga spaces, and I share stories of the healing potential of Restorative Yoga to alleviate the pain and suffering associated with racial wounding. Kali has always been my favorite goddess to share. One, because of her power but also because there is such misunderstanding of what she actually represents. Kali IS the goddess of transformation and she IS scary, with her blue/black body, hanging tongue and necklace of skulls. However her energy is there to transform, to help us to cut away that which we no longer need, either in our external worlds, or aspects of our internal life which need to be released. In addition, she is extremely important in that she helps to release us from FEAR. And she is always there so that the new and beautiful can be born in our lives.  MORE

Lifting spirits! Enjoy this wonderful kirtan with Astrud Castillo and hosted by the Integral Yoga Institute of San Francisco. Jai!

Most of the work I do is in pastoral counseling. My challenge is how to present the Buddhist teachings in a way that is culturally relevant to African Americans, who are acutely aware of the precariousness of their lives. The conclusion I have come to is that Buddhists need to connect African Americans to a larger story than the Buddha’s individual liberation.... In this new story, what noble truths arise when Siddhartha sees the suffering of racism? Siddhartha’s first truth could be “People, including loved ones, try to protect you from the truth of other people’s harmful delusions.”  MORE

Gratitude to Integral Yoga Natural Foods (Charlottesville) & Mandala Market & Café (Yogaville) for their wonderful service during the pandemic. If you look closely, you can see divine smiles (Karuna Howeth & LJ Dentz) through their twinkling eyes. IYNF staff shop for organic groceries, which LJ picks up as a free service to Yogaville community members. Requests are emailed to IYNF on Thursday morning and groceries are ready for pickup the next morning at the Café. (Photo & report by Jeff Ananda Kamen)
