Celebrating the Ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Needham

The Presbytery of Boston invites you to a service celebrating the life, mission, and ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Needham as they conclude their witness together as a congregation. Click here to download a brief history of their congregation, which dates back to May 1887. A service of worship to mark this moment will be held Sunday, June 14, at 4:00 pm via Zoom. All are welcome. The link for the service will go live at 3:45 pm so that everyone can join a few minutes early and be ready before the service begins.

Communion will be celebrated during the service, so be sure to have elements prepared beforehand at your home or from wherever you will be joining us.

All the information for joining the service via Zoom, including the necessary password, can be found below:

They have enjoyed these beautiful pieces for many years and hope that the recipient churches will enjoy them as well. The transport cost will be the responsibility of the recipient. If interested, please contact Peggy Hellberg at phellberg55@aol.com or 781-449-4046 before June 30.

Malmark Handbells
A 3-octave set of high quality Malmark handbells, including C4 through C7 (37 bells in all). Also included: cases for all handbells, handbell music, 3 handbell tables, and some pads. Please identify if you already have handbells and what your plans are for their use.

Piano
This Boston grand piano, designed my Steinway & Sons, has been well-maintained.

Mosaics and Stained Glass
These pieces are the work of Lexington artist David Holleman. He was educated at the Boston Museum School with interests in painting and ceramics. Beth Craft, Mr. Holleman’s daughter, gave these works to the Presbyterian Church in Needham in honor of her brother, Michael D. Holleman. These pieces are large (approx. 2ft x 4ft).

35th Annual Karl Barth Seminar

The Massachusetts Convention of Congregational Ministers holds a yearly seminar dedicated to Karl Barth and his Church Dogmatics. This year the Karl Barth Seminar will take place via ZOOM on June 15 and will consist of 2 sessions. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Phil Jamieson from Nashville.

The morning session will be looking at Church Dogmatics IV/2 "The Doctrine of Reconciliation"--Barth's inspiration behind the Parable of the Prodigal Son as a figure of Christ.

The afternoon session will begin with the comment that Modernists could talk about "existence" and will read Karl Barth vis-a-vis Albert Camus.

New! 21-Day Racial Justice Challenge: As part of our commitment to dismantle structural racism, you are invited to join in the 21-Day Racial Justice Challenge, formulated by the PC(USA) and shared through the Matthew 25 website. We will begin the challenge on Monday, July 6 and complete it on Sunday, July 26.

Three different opportunities for weekly conversation will be offered, but you can also form your own small group to go even deeper. However you do it, the purpose is to engage in daily learning challenges for 21 days, and to go deeper through conversation. You can learn more and register to join the challenge on our website by clicking here.

New! Commitment to Eradicating Poverty: The Poor People's Campaign is holding a Mass Digital Assembly and Moral March on Washington on June 20, 2020. When we set the dates for our digital PC(USA) General Assembly, we intentionally kept June 20 clear so it would be possible for all to participate. This call to action is directly related to our commitment to eradicate systemic poverty. You can learn more through our website and you can register to join the Mass Assembly by clicking here.

New! PsalmSeason: In response to the unfolding global pandemic and upheaval over racial injustice, The Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership at Hebrew College and the Interfaith Youth Core launched a major new digital initiative entitled PsalmSeason: An Online Encounter with the Wisdom of the Psalms.

The PsalmSeason project kicked-off with a live concert “PsalmSeason: A Playlist for our Time” featuring 18 musical and poetic expressions from a diverse group of performers from Ireland, Uganda, Israel, and the US. Click here to watch the concert.

Update! Connect Throughout the Week: We have two opportunities during the week to connect for support and encouragement. The login information can be found in the Presbytery calendar on the website.

Wednesdays meetings are no longer being held.

Webinar on Churches Reopening: In this resource Cindy Kohlmann presents theological, ecclesiastical, and practical considerations related to reopening church buildings, as well as reasons those considerations should encourage churches to continue virtual online activities moving into the future. You can click here to watch the webinar.

Peace Camp: Even though GA will be virtual and pared down to only the business that is “critical” for the church’s institutional maintenance (budgets, elections), the true calling of the Church remains the same: to be peacemakers and preach the Gospel by practicing justice in our families, communities, and world. That’s why the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship is hosting Presbyterian Peace Camp: A Virtual Week of Learning, Prayer, and Action June 18-27.

July 5 Recorded Service: We will be providing a video of a complete worship service, including a sermon based on the lectionary, for July 5 for your congregation to use. Pastors and worship planners, we hope this will allow you to take a Sunday off over the holiday weekend!

COVID-19 Resources: There is now a page on our website dedicated to COVID-19 resources. You will also find a list of what our congregations are doing as alternatives to Sunday services and other gatherings at their churches. As you finalize plans for live-streaming services and other activities, please email office@presbyteryofboston.org so we can list what your church is doing on the website.

Prayer Concerns: Jennifer Wegter-McNelly's brain scans have been clear, but the mix of medication she is on saps her energy. Occasionally she suffers from vertigo, but on the whole is doing okay. She can be reached at jmcweg@gmail.com. Thank you for holding her in prayer. Her husband Kirk is in a tenure-track position at Union College in the Religion Department.

Mission at the Eastward Housing Ministry Work Group Application: MATE is reinventing itself, and would like to draw all kinds of new volunteers into its existing and new and innovative programs. If you feel that you our your church may be called to come spend some time with us this summer, repairing the homes of our neighbors in Western Maine and serving the least of these, please reach out to Thea Kornelius at rev.thea.mate@gmail.com or just fill out this application and send it back to us at PO Box 206, Farmington, ME, 04938.

Women Thriving in Ministry: Ruthie Seiders, a member-at-large of our Presbytery, is leading a cohort of women pastors for encouragement and spiritual formation through a program called Thriving in Ministry in New England through Gordon-Conwell Seminary. This cohort is completely funded by a Lily grant. If you are interested, please email rseiders@grace.org
