President’s message
I see you

It occurred to me that even when I wear a mask, I still smile at people. They can’t see my face and I can’t see theirs, but I smile just the same. Maybe they can tell I’m smiling, maybe they can’t. That’s ok. I won’t stop. I see you. And I’m happy to see you, that’s why I smile.
A smile won’t solve our problems, but acknowledging people is a place to start. By definition, acknowledge means to admit the existence or truth of; to express recognition of; make notice of. Now is the time to acknowledge those around you. Make eye contact. Connect.

You may not look like that person. Acknowledge them anyway. You may not feel you can relate to that person. Acknowledge them anyway. You may not understand what it’s like to be that person. Acknowledge them anyway.

Acknowledge that some are not treated fairly and just. But also acknowledge that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and just. Acknowledge that some abuse their power. But also acknowledge that your voice has power. Acknowledge that some stand by without acting. But also acknowledge that some will not stand by.

We are all humans. I see you. Now more than ever. Mask or no mask.

WELCOME OUR NEWEST MEMBER

Hello, my name is Kaylee Zuidema and I am going into my senior year at Florida Gulf Coast University. I am a communications major with a concentration in public relations, and started attending the FGCU student FPRA meetings my sophomore year after hearing about it from a professor. I have learned so much from the meetings, and I am excited to now serve on the student board as the membership & marketing director. After my plans to study abroad over the summer got canceled, I found myself back home in Port St. Lucie for the summer and looking for ways to fill my time. My aunt, Kate Parmelee who works with President Jenny Tomes and President Elect Sarah Prohaska, knew the FPRA Treasure Coast had been looking for students to get involved and passed along my resume. I was also lucky enough to have a friend connect me with the communication director of St. Lucie County, and I look forward to gaining further experience in the county office throughout the summer. I have been welcomed into the FPRA Treasure Coast with open arms, and I am excited to work with you all over the summer
Nominate a Communicator of the Year
There are so many amazing PRo’s on the Treasure Coast and now is the time to honor their hard work! Your FPRA Chapter is asking you to nominate someone you feel has gone above and beyond to represent their organization in the following categories:
  • Nonprofit/Government Organization
  • Corporate Organization
  • Public Relations for a Special Event
  • Crisis

Nominations are due by June 26. Download the online form here and send to Jenny Tomes at jtomes@cityofpsl.com. Winners will be announced at the FPRA Treasure Coast Chapter Annual Meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 8 a.m. at PGA Golf Club. We will also be presenting the local Image Award winners with their physical awards at this time.
Buy a shirt, house a fish
As we celebrate our 35th year as a chapter, it was important to me as president to facilitate a meaningful community project that would benefit the Treasure Coast. Traditionally, couples give the gift of coral for their 35th wedding anniversary. As a Florida girl, I’m more accustomed to the coral you find underwater versus coral in its gemstone form. And since we are the Treasure Coast, I figured the underwater variety was way more appropriate for this occasion!

So, our chapter’s gift to our community this year is an artificial mini reef to be placed in the North Fork of the St. Lucie River under a dock below the Crosstown Parkway Extension Bridge in Port St. Lucie. This mini reef is capable of filtering an average of 30,000 gallons of water a day and housing 300 fish and 200 crab per year. When placed under the dock, it will create an ecosystem by mimicking the prop roots of a mangrove system, creating an excellent hangout for fish and birds alike. Watch underwater video of existing artificial mini reef and check out the growth!

Our chapter is selling t-shirts over the next few months, and with the proceeds (approximately $500), we will purchase the artificial mini reef. The funds will also cover the cost of installation. A plaque will be placed on the dock at the reef site commemorating this gift from our chapter. An installation ceremony will be held later this year and I will be working with President Elect Sarah Prohaska to coordinate the event.

Safely get your steps in at our next cleanup!
Our next Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful (KPSLB) street cleanup will be held on Saturday, June 27 at 9 a.m. at Keiser University. Cleanup supplies and t-shirts will be provided, just let us know what size you need. This is a great way to get your steps in while beautifying our street and keeping your social distance! If you have kids who need volunteer hours for school, this cleanup counts! KPSLB will provide documentation confirming their volunteer time. Please sign up for this event on our website or on Facebook.
