Retreating to Nature

There is something mildly irritating about reading research done on the health benefits of getting into nature. I mean, is reading about a controlled study really helpful when anyone who has been under the canopy of an aspen forest has felt the peace, calm and serenity directly? This is not to dispel the wealth of what we know scientifically about people who enter nature repeatedly. They have been found to re-establish proper sleep cycles, decrease the fight-or-flight response by down-regulating the nervous system, lower blood pressure and more. Yet, there are intangible benefits that I have experienced, such as gaining perspective on a busy life back home, reflecting on world events with better clarity, and pondering questions to better arrive at decisions, especially those big ones such as moving or changing career paths. There is also a spiritual aspect of nature to explore, no matter your belief, religion or faith system.

It doesn’t seem to matter how you engage with nature, but that you simply do so. We are fortunate in Western Colorado to have access to a number of quiet places, be it a town park, the cultivated Botanical Gardens, a lonely hiking trail in the Monument or a stretch of the Colorado River. You might have to go a bit further with the curiously busier local trails in the last few months, but a little extra effort can bring you and a friend or loved one into some very serene places. I encourage you to do this in the bigger picture of better health for you and your loved ones, beyond the physical benefits.
