Message from the Division Director

Dear Colleagues,

Some updates:

  1. Virtual citywide GIM rounds were launched earlier this month, with an excellent overview of COVID-19 management. July’s rounds will be an interactive webinar on how to teach virtually (details below). Please stay tuned for ongoing rounds scheduling. And if you are interested in the position of Lead for GIM Continuing Education to help in the development of these rounds and other activities, please let me know.
  2. Events in recent days have highlighted the prevalence of anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, and other forms of racism in our society. I encourage our division to recognize both the personal and public health impact of racial injustice and inequality, to work together and with other organizations to oppose and dismantle structural racism, and to take concrete steps to strengthen diversity and inclusion within our own division. This year’s GIM citywide rounds will include sessions dedicated to anti-racist practice and allyship training.
  3. PARO has approved implementation of the GIM redesign for July 2021. Some hospitals will be pilot testing elements of the redesign during the coming academic year. Many thanks to the redesign committee led by Ophyr Mourad and to the internal medicine residency training program for their tremendous work on this initiative.
  4. Thanks to each and every one of you (faculty, residents, administrators) who has worked so hard all year, and especially during the pandemic, to ensure that we have maintained outstanding patient care, education and scholarly work. Many congratulations to all our graduating residents and to our award recipients (more award announcements to follow in the July newsletter). Sincere thanks to our outgoing chief medical residents. And happy Pride month!

With all best wishes,
Moira
Dr. Moira Kapral
Director, Division of General Internal Medicine, University of Toronto

Graduations
GIM Subspecialty PGY5s Graduate!

Congratulations to Alison Lai, Wasim Mansoor, Jon Mong and Kulraj Singh, the graduating class of 2020 for the GIM subspecialty program at the University of Toronto, seen below at their physically distanced graduation ceremony. We wish you all the best as you embark on your careers in GIM. Congratulations!

Core Internal Medicine PGY4s Graduate!

Congratulations to Evan Ailon, Jin Choi, Jenna Gim, Mohamad Habbal, Tyler Hynes, Sabah Khan, Karen Lien, Patrick Lindsay, Cam Tu Janet Nguyen, Hamzah Quereshi, Sagar Rohailla, Faranak Sharifi Ghorveh, Anil Sharma, Brooke Tang and Lex Wei, the graduating class of 2020 for the Core Internal Medicine PGY4 program at the University of Toronto.

At the end of June, the Core Internal Medicine PGY4 cohort completed their training and began the next phase of their careers – independent practice! This group has had a final training year like no other in recent memory. The COVID-19 pandemic put all our residents through a series of rapid adaptations of their training to support the burgeoning demand on the health care system. The PGY4s were redeployed in the final three blocks of the year to the TAHSN community sites to support GIM and critical care there, as admissions rapidly increased. All of them took on their new responsibilities eagerly and brought their skills to the places they were needed most. Continue reading full graduation message from program director Jeannette Goguen and faculty lead Ken Locke.
