Over 40 years ago, a small group of agitators, firebrands and troublemakers joined together to form a united front for youth workers in our state. That same activist spirit, fuelled by an undying commitment to the rights of young people, runs through everything we do at the Youth Affairs Council of WA.
As we move into this recovery phase, we’re faced with an extraordinary challenge. Young people are expected to be some of the hardest hit by this upheaval to employment, education and daily life.
By becoming a member, you’ll be supporting our small team of change-makers to fight for every young person in our state.
Youth Workers Unite #7: Supporting LGBTQAI+ Young People
Our fortnightly COVID response & resiliency sessions, Youth Workers Unite, continue next Wednesday with a free webinar from educator Bella Broadway of Connection and Wellbeing Australia.
LGBTQIA+ young people are one of the most vulnerable cohorts in the wake of COVID-19. Many LGBTIQA+ young people rely heavily on chosen family, informal support networks, and the provision of safe spaces outside of their typical home or place of residence.
Social distancing requirements have disrupted these supports for many LGBTIQA+ young people, and increased their contact with unsupportive and unsafe family environments. As a result, LGBTQIA+ young people are face increased risk of mental health problems, disengagement from services and associated challenges.
Bella Broadway will explore the specific challenges and impacts faced by LGBTQAI+ young people through COVID-19, equip youth workers with the preventative and postventative tools to support and respond to their needs.

ConnectGroupss the peak body for Peer Support Groups in WA. ConnectGroups works to empower and sustains existing and emerging Support Groups through advocacy, resourcing, education, training, and capacity-building. Support Groups provide peer support on a wide range of issues including mental health, chronic and genetic conditions, trauma, and social challenges.
This is a newly created position to support the advocacy and governance arm of the organisation. The purpose of the Senior Policy Officer is to influence as much as possible as an advocate for the Support Group sector; by driving member consultation, producing research, and developing influential relationships with key stakeholders.
