From the National Office

Dear masters community,

This month marks a fantastic milestone for many of us as we focus our return to swimming. The excitement to be back (or nearly back) in the water has never felt so good, while we continue to maintain a strong focus of looking after ourselves and each other.

The recently launched industry guidelines together with varying Federal, State and venue requirements has meant a lot more paperwork for us, however these are important procedures to lay down and will guide us to our new swimming protocols. Please read updates to our COVID-19 Resource page HERE.

This month we have released a 9-12 week swimming program, written by Greg Gourley (MSA 2019 Coach of the year); be sure to ask your coach about this helpful guide back to swimming training – safely!

Our hardworking organisation and dedicated team of members, volunteers and coaches will continue to keep you connected and up to date with the latest plans to return safely to the water.

Thank you to everyone across the country in the masters swimming community who have worked so hard to make this happen.

Stay Safe

MSA teams up with Sports Dietitians Australia

As a Masters Swimmer we understand that you are part of unique group of athletes with important nutritional needs that deserves your attention and investment. This is why Masters Swimming Australia has been working in collaboration with Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA) to develop resources that are designed to not only enrich your member experience but to provide you with nutrition facts specific to your needs.

With life experience comes greater wisdom, however there is also the inevitable loss of muscle mass, strength and function known as sarcopenia as we age, as well as reductions in bone strength associated with hormonal changes.

Exercise and a nutritious training diet complement one another like jigsaw pieces. They will support each other if pieced correctly and complete the picture of your health and performance in the water! Masters swimmers have unique nutritional requirements. Key nutrients including protein, creatine, iron, B12, calcium and Vitamin D, can all play a valuable role in supporting your health and performance, without forgetting great quality carbohydrate foods to fuel your physical and immune systems.

Adequate and tailored nutrition interventions can assist supporting the maintenance or increase in muscular strength and functional movement, as well as reduce the risk of chronic disease and broken bones.

SDA have published an interesting article in their digital ReFuel Magazine on page 7 that discusses “The role of protein and creatine for Master Swimmers”.

Events to look forward to!
Whilst you may not be able to train like you normally do, you may not be able to access water at all or as much as you would like it is always good to have things to aim for! Please note that the 2020 Alice Springs Masters Games, 2020 Pan Pacific Masters Games and 2021 Arafura Games have all been cancelled. The organisers are all busy looking to future dates.
