This week at the Training Hub...

This week at Devon Training Hub we have we working on improving and expanding our digital education offers to you with new courses coming on line almost daily as we work with our regular educators to move traditional F2F learning onto digital platforms. This is all new to us and we as always welcome any feedback and ideas of how our systems can be improved. In particular we have a new online course on Summarising Medical Notes which we hope will be of value to your teams.

The ‘new normal’ for us as for everyone else is starting to emerge and obviously this will be everything digital and online for the foreseeable future. The team are all working from home and we are all fairly used to this now although missing the day to day interaction that makes us all so happy to be working for Devon Training Hub.

With many of the projects we are working on we are waiting for national guidelines to come through as to how they should work in the new normal, for example Clinical Supervision will now be based on a digital network rather than F2F supervision. I hope that we will have news on this soon. Local Forums will also resume soon in digital format.

Video Group Consultations (VGCs) have been on hold for a few weeks due to an indemnity issue which has now been solved by NHSE/I. Here in Devon we will have some dates issued next week for all practices to book onto Local Briefing Sessions, in the first couple of weeks of July, these will be followed by the training itself delivered by the ELC team and in the Autumn when you have all completed the training and started to implement VGCs into your clinics we will arrange some follow ups to capture and share learning and pick up any issues. Finalised dates will be in our newsletter next week.

Our preceptorship programmes are continuing on line also which we hope will have been helpful for the practices that have these nurses as they learn new skills which will embed them into  their practice teams.

Finally, if you have or are  an HCA who is interested in upskilling to be a Nursing Associate, please contact me for more information: lucywood1@nhs.net

Wishing you all a restful weekend,

New To Practice Fellowships

Dear PCNs and Practices,

As you will no doubt have heard, NHSE&I are introducing a fully funded Fellowship offer for GPs and Nurses who are new to General Practice. Devon Training Hub is co-ordinating this offer across Devon and we are pleased to be able to now provide you with details of the offer for the first tranche of these fellowships. From a PCN / Practice point of view there are 3 points for you to consider:

  1. If you have a GP or nurse new to general practice
If you have any GP or Nurse who is working for you who qualified since November 2018 and you are interested in them taking up one of these fully funded fellowship positions, please can you send your expression of interest giving details to andy.smallshaw@nhs.net by 30th June 2020. You will see from the document that places are limited at this moment in time, so once the closing date has passed, we will be back in touch to let you know the next steps.
  1. If you are looking to employ a newly qualified GP or nurse
This offer is also being circulated out HEIs and Medical Schools to allow students who are about to qualify and who are interested in working in Primary Care the opportunity to apply. We will gather their details in a database and we are therefore keen to hear from your PCN / Practice if you are looking to employ a student and we can then put you in contact with these students for your to commence your recruitment process. Obviously, the eligibility criteria for the fellowship requires participants to ‘hold, or be about to hold, a substantive salaried or partnership contract in Primary Care and must be working to provide primary medical services’ and so they will only be able to commence the fellowship once they meet these criteria.
  1. If you are a newly qualified GP or Nurse
If you are a newly qualified GP or Nurse, having qualified since November 2018, currently working in Primary Care and you are interested in this Fellowship offer, please contact your Practice Manager to discuss your interest and the possibility of them submitting an expression of interest as required.

Please click here to see the document that we have produced giving details of the Fellowship offer. Hopefully you will find all the information that you require on there, but if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards,
Andy

Be alert to Test and Trace - Potential Scam

People are being advised to be on the lookout for possible scams related to the Test and Trace service, which launched on the 28 May to help control the Covid-19 virus. There may be attempts scammers to try to use the same methods as the Test and Trace to obtain personal information.

People will be alerted by the NHS Test and Trace service if they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

Contact tracers will:

  • call from 0300 013 5000
  • send text messages from ‘NHS’
  • ask people to sign into the NHS test and trace contact-tracing website
  • ask for full name and date of birth to confirm identity, and postcode to offer support while self-isolating
  • ask about the coronavirus symptoms
  • ask people to provide the name, telephone number and/or email address of anyone they have had close contact with in the 2 days prior to symptoms starting
  • ask if anyone they have been in contact with is under 18 or lives outside of England

They will not ask:

  • for bank details, or payments
  • for details of any other accounts, such as social media
  • set up a password or PIN number over the phone
  • to call a premium rate number, such as those starting 09 or 087

COVID19 UPDATES

Antibody testing in primary care

While NHS England has launched antibody testing across the country last week, the laboratory arrangements locally for the testing to take place in primary care is still being co-ordinated so that there is access across all four of our localities.

Plans are being developed to ensure that all staff (who wish to be tested) will be able to be tested within the next 6 weeks. Practices will have been contacted to gain an understanding of demand.  We are awaiting further detailed national guidance on antibody testing, but it’s likely that staff testing will be prioritised.

If you have been contacted by your local laboratory and are able to request antibody test for patients through your usual blood requests, please continue to do so, otherwise we hope to have an update from all four trusts, along with guidance on patient testing and the process for staff testing shortly.

  • Diabetes

Updated Shielding Guidance for
Clinically Vulnerable People

You will have seen that on 31 May 2020, the Government has updated its guidance for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 and have been advised to shield. The update from Government comes into effect from 1 June 2020. In summary the changes are:

·       The advice for people identified as clinically extremely vulnerable is that they should continue to shield until at least the 30 June but from 1 June, they can spend a short period of time outdoors each day with members of their household, still maintaining 2 metre distance from others.

·       If the shielded person lives alone, the Government is advising they can meet one other person from a different household, maintaining strict social distancing. The advice is that this be the same person each time.

·       Important aspects of Government’s policy and guidance remain the same. Apart from going outside once per day, a shielded person should continue to avoid all non-essential face to face contact. This means they should still not go shopping or to pharmacies.
·       The support for shielded people remains in place and unchanged.

The Government has also confirmed that it will be reviewing shielding guidance alongside wider changes to social distancing, including plans to write to those on the shielding patients list with information about next steps on shielding after the next review on 15 June 2020.

Supported by the Royal College of General Practitioners and other key stakeholders as part of the guideline development group, it includes the key principles for safely assessing patients using a video consultation.

The guidance is split into two sections; the first section covers general information for staff such as information governance, medico-legal and consent. Section two outlines guidance for remote examinations including intimate examination and a practical step-by-step guide to starting a remote video consultation.
myAsthma App

Asthma is the perfect condition for digitally enabled care, and the NHS approved app myAsthma, from my mhealth, provides a great vehicle for delivering this. A report published by Asthma UK [1] recommended the following specifically for Primary Care Networks:
  1. Health professionals should continue to invest, adopt, and embrace digital platforms that allow for asthma reviews to be conducted remotely
  2. Ensure that every patient with asthma has a digital copy of their personalised asthma action plan available and is updated at each review
  3. Every PCN should each appoint a respiratory lead to drive improvements in services for people with asthma
myAsthma enables you to manage your patient effectively and remotely by providing everything you need for delivering the annual review remotely and more efficiently. myAsthma provides patients with:
  • Digital Asthma Action Plans
  • Evidence based inhaler instruction (correcting over 70% of inhaler errors)
  • Medication diary to improve compliance and highlight those using their reviler inhaler more than x 3 per week
  • Remote Asthma Control Test™ (ACT) delivered every 4 weeks with feedback regarding asthma control
