Transforming lives through Christ

St. Michael's ~ Friday Brief

June 5, 2020
Reflection

Worshipping via livestream is not the same as worshipping with others in church. How’s that for stating the blindingly obvious? It’s also become a necessity as COVID-19 has changed everything about the way we live. As best I can tell from daily virus tracking reports, there is more that we don’t know about the virus, how it is transmitted and how it should be treated than we do know. And so, we wash our hands, wear our masks and learn to live with anxiety as a frequent companion.

All of that influences our decision making in regard to where and how to worship. We are making one change beginning this Sunday.  We will celebrate Holy Eucharist every Sunday instead of first Sundays each month. In keeping with Bishop Smith’s guidance, only the celebrant will sip from the chalice, and only the immediate altar party will receive the host until we begin the process of reopening.

Communion is a part of corporate worship, that is, it is not intended to be celebrated by individuals. Not even a priest celebrates the Eucharist individually. There is a great deal of discussion in church circles on the web about how communion should be celebrated now, and, of course, many different opinions. Our Episcopal tradition, however, is a good one. And we will, at the right time, gather again to receive the gifts of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Blessings,
Alan+
Statement from the Province IV Bishops of The Episcopal Church
Sunday Morning at 10:30
On Sunday, Holy Eucharist (Rite II) begins at 10:30 a.m. Remember, if you are not able to view the service when it is live, it remains on the St. Michael’s website to be viewed at other times.   The Sunday service will continue at 10:30  a.m. until we are able to have in-person services again.

A copy of the service bulletin is attached to this email (red button below) and will be current each week.  You can follow online or print out the bulletin.  Either way, I encourage you to not only follow along, but participate as well.  You can read the congregational responses and prayers aloud; and sing along with the music. It may feel a little strange at first, but you will quickly become used to it, and you will know that you are worshiping together with many others of our St. Michael’s online congregation.

Also attached to this email is the link (blue button below) to watch the service via Livestream...live or recorded.  If you sign on early...wait for the service to begin.  You'll see the timer counting down.  DO NOT press the "Go Live" button at the top.

Nancy Strayer, 96, a former member of St. Michael and All Angels has sent her greetings to in an email from her daughter, Martha Russell. Nancy said she has many fond memories of friends and times at St. Michael’s. After some time at Shell Point, she now lives with Martha and her husband dividing her time between North Key Largo and Toronto. She also noted that her brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Marjorie York, both former members of St. Michael’s as well, died some time ago. Nancy wishes everyone well and sends her best wishes to all.
Prayer for New Rector Search

God of patient and gentle strength, who knows our needs before we ask, may your loving presence guide us as we seek the next rector for St. Michael and All Angels. Give us an open spirit, discerning hearts and clear minds, that we may trust your will for us and become ever more united in your son our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Inspire our conversation, deepen our prayer, and make us a community of humility and grace.  Raise up for us, we pray, a priest and pastor who will boldly proclaim your Gospel, faithfully administer your sacraments, and serve your people with love and compassion.  Amen.

Thank you to all our friends for your outpouring of love, support, comfort, and cards during and following the death of my brother, Tom. It comforts me greatly knowing that Bob and I are surrounded by such a loving community. While missing you in person, your presence and comfort have been very apparent.
Blessings on us all, Joanne Syversen
