Coming Back Together

This past Monday, the congregation council met via Zoom to discuss gathering in-person for worship. At that time, we had seen several days of increased new cases in Hays County as well as surrounding areas. We had said that a downward trend would be our guide and we have not seen that. It is probably less safe now than it was a few weeks ago.

We will be re-evaluating this at another meeting soon, every two weeks is our plan. We know this is a disappointment for some but we know that places where people gather for long periods of time are a risk, and we have to consider safety first.
Worship this week

This sunday worship will be a bit different. In order to get our musicians and staff a Sunday off from the work of worship combined with producing a livestream, we will be using a worship service produced by the Southwestern Texas Synod and the ELCA Churchwide Office. This is a unique opportunity for our Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton to preach in many of our congregations on a single Sunday. She will be preaching, and the rest of the service will be led by our synod staff, including Bishop Sue Briner.

The service is being pre-recorded because it is used by congregations all over, some of whom do not do their worship live because of technology and because service times vary.

As of this writing, I do not have the full bulletin so any hymns that will be included are not available. When I do have it, it will be posted in the usual spot at
http:// http://flcsm.org/next-sunday-worship-book/ .

Our plan is to present it the same way we have been. You will use the same Zoom link we have been using (below) or go to the Facebook page just like you have been. The worship service will play there much like the video of the Acts reading did last week. We will still be worshipping together as a congregation and have the opportunity to see and check in afterwards. If it turns out that any of these things do not work as we believe they will, updates will be sent as we know what the plan will be.

One change: The synod has had a varied practices between congregations regarding celebration of Holy Communion online. Because of that, the service this weekend will be a Service Of The Word and will not have Holy Communion.

The readings for Sunday are:

Genesis 1:1--2:4: The creation of the heavens and the earth
Psalm 8: How majestic is your name in all the earth! (Ps. 8:1)
2 Corinthians 13:11-13: Paul’s farewell to the church at Corinth
Matthew 28:16-20: Living in the community of the Trinity

You can read them online at https://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/texts.php?id=142

Rather than resend worship instructions each week, I will refer you to the website because changes can and do happen right up to worship time. The website can be changed in minutes if needed to update links or passwords. You can find all the information at https://flcsm.org/onlineworship/ and more complete instructions at https://flcsm.org/worshipaccess/

The worship book now has a permanent address so you can find it easily and there will be fewer chances for errors. It will be at http:// http://flcsm.org/next-sunday-worship-book/ . You might find a placeholder file there during the week. It will be posted by Saturday at the latest.  (There may be changes in prayers and other small items, but the link should remain the same. If there are any major changes, which we do not anticipate, we would send another email on Sunday.) IF YOU GO there on Saturday and Sunday and find last weeks file you need to fully refresh your browser because your conputer is reading its cached version. If that does not work try getting the file from the link on the worship page.
Living Lutheran

The June/July issue of Living Lutheran is out. We have put them in a box on the benches near the main doors to the church building. You can also find it online at http://pubs.royle.com/publication/?i=659394&pre=1 or by visiting https://www.livinglutheran.org/ where you can find a great deal of content that is not in the print magazine.
Not Us, Who? If Not Now, When?
Synod Event on Racism

Presiding Bishop Eaton recently posed these questions to us in a recorded statement to the church. Though we have begun the work as individuals and as a synod to address racism in our communities, our current reality demands that we adapt our plans and even our intentions.

You are invited to join Bishop Sue to consider WHAT we will do next on the path to becoming what Dr. Martin Luther King envisioned in his concept of “Beloved Community.”
