Grad School: Considerations for College Students and Working Professionals

People attend grad school for a variety of reasons. Whether you are pursuing a subject you love, seeking to advance your career, or trying something new for the love of learning, here are some things to consider before taking the plunge.

Considerations for College Students

Pick your passion

The goal of an undergraduate degree is to provide a broad foundation in higher education after high school, and your major gives you the opportunity to get more deeply involved in a subject of your choice. A graduate degree is deeper still, requiring a level of commitment and interest above and beyond that of undergrad. If you can’t easily identify your true passions, it is wise to hold off before starting your graduate degree. A little work and life experience will help you distinguish between a true passion and a passing fancy.

Grad. & Prof. School Admissions and COVID-19

Due to COVID-19, various graduate school admissions exams — including the GMAT, GRE, LSAT, and MCAT — have been postponed or canceled.

This impacts everyone, applicants and schools alike. Delayed or online testing and admissions without testing are options being considered.

Please stay up to date with the organization who administers the test you want to take. They’ll provide updates as the situation evolves.

Considerations for Professionals

Progress or career change

As the number of undergraduates grows globally, getting a graduate degree sets you apart from other job applicants. It illustrates your excitement for and deeper understanding of your subject as well as your commitment to your career. A graduate degree can also be a steppingstone to a career change. Taking graduate level courses or completing a Masters degree can be an effective signal to a potential employer that, while you have work experience in one area, you are committed to a shift in your profession.

"I chose to work with Doing College and Beyond specifically because Elizabeth takes very few clients each cycle to ensure she has ample time to devote to each individual applicant. But the main reason I decided to work with Elizabeth is because of her candor in speaking to the positive and negative aspects of my application. Elizabeth’s comments helped me to shape a meaningful personal statement and concise, poignant answers to secondary prompts which made my application stand out in the large, highly competitive applicant pool.

Finally, Elizabeth provided emotional support and perspective through the ups and downs of the application process, providing timely answers to questions which just can’t be found roaming through internet blogs. For those applicants looking for an honest opinion on their medical school application and the help needed to turn a good application into one that truly projects your best self, I highly recommend looking no further than Elizabeth LaScala and Doing College and Beyond.”
