Beginning Worshipful Walks and Communion Appointments!
 
On Sunday June 7th, we will begin two new initiatives, in addition to no-contact Eucharistic Visits, to supplement our livestreaming services and to help share the sacramental life of the church. These are both early test runs, as we work towards expanding in person worship outdoors in the weeks to come.

First, Communion Appointments, where members of your household come for a short private service and receive the Eucharist in the sanctuary.  This Sunday, there will be ten-minute appointments available between 2-4PM.  Adults and older children will wear masks, which can be removed to receive communion. You will enter and exit the building through the Washington Road entrance and access to other part of the building will not be possible. 

Second, Worshipful Walks, which is a short hike in a local park with one of our clergy, which includes stops for readings and reflection including a celebration and sharing of the Eucharist.  Adults and older children will wear masks, which can be removed to receive communion. This hike is 1-1.5 miles and will last about an hour.  The park location will be emailed after registration.  We are offering two of these at 2PM and 3:30PM this Sunday, limited to 6 households each.

LIVE Children's Chapel: Sunday at 9:30 a.m.


At popular request, this Sunday, Mr. Choura will be doing Children's Chapel LIVE, from St. Paul's library/chapel space.  CLICK HERE to join!  Children of all ages are welcome to attend, as we are ALL God's children!  We'll have music, prayers, a homily, and all the other things that make chapel time GREAT!

Sunday Service Over the Phone

 
St. Paul's will be playing the Sunday morning service over the phone at 1:30pm on Sunday afternoons for folks who do not have internet access.  If you know someone who would like to listen to our services.  We have shared this information with our list of parishioners who have expressed interest, and if you would like to join us please call this number at 1:30pm on Sundays: 1-646-558-8656, meeting ID: 412 531 7153. As we do every month, the first Sunday of May (this Sunday!) we will be collecting donations for the South Hills Food Pantry.  In lieu of pantry items, we are asking that you instead make a financial donation to the Food Pantry using the link here. Thank you to everyone who donated for their amazing generosity in caring for our neighbors in need during this difficult time!

Digital Art Walk: Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m.
 
You are invited to a digital art walk on Friday June 5th at 7 p.m.!  Please bring a piece of art that has meaning to you, whether it is hanging on your fridge or your wall and share a story about it in two minutes or less.  People can also attend without presenting and simply enjoy the event. The mantra throughout The Presiding Bishop‘s sermon last week was his passionate quotation of the spiritual, “there is a balm in Gilead.” This Sunday we will sing that spiritual at the communion and I have composed a reflection on the same for organ, played at the offertory. In similar times of national unrest, Leonard Bernstein wrote these words of comfort, “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before."
You do not need to be a musician in order to make music. The making, the synthesis of music is more than musical composition and performance. It is spiritual reality holding the love of sound and thought in your mind and heart. Music is an agent of healing, a “balm in Gilead.”

Reflection Groups Continue with the Path: A Journey Through the Bible-June 1 - September 6
 
On Pentecost, our parish reflection groups will conclude their reading of the Book of Acts.  From June 1 through Labor Day, our reflection groups will continue with reading The Path: A Journey Through the Bible.  From the Publisher: The Path is the story of the Bible, excerpted from the New Revised Standard Version so that it is clear and easy to read. Follow the path of God's love all the way from the beginning to the end, from Adam's creation to John's revelation.  Walk in the footsteps of faithful men and women who have done their best to follow God's call.  With informative trail signs to help you see how each piece of the narrative fits together, The Path is an experience unlike any other: an amazing 360-degree overview of the vast, sweeping story of God's extraordinary love for ordinary people. Join us on this epic adventure, a journey through the Bible to grow closer to God.  The book is available in paper and electronic versions and needs to be purchased.  It is available here.

The Young Adult Path Discussion Group Update
 
The Young Adult Path discussion will move to Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm and is now available for parishioners of all ages to attend!  Please join us starting on June 11th using this link here.
Learning to Pray Class & Small Groups
 
Based on this very basic human desire to know God, we have developed a 9 week course that provides a framework that will guide each of us into a deeper more meaningful relationship with God. The Learning to Pray course will begin Saturday June 13th and will run until August 22nd. We will take the July 4th weekend off. It is built around small groups of 5-6 people per group, each with its own trained leader to guide you. The initial two meetings will be all of us together then we will break up for 6 weeks of experiential learning, followed by a closing meeting with all of us together again. The small groups will meet for 1 hour per week at a time agreed to by the group. It is hoped that the integrity and strength of each group will grow with your attendance at each meeting but this is not a requirement. We will meet via Zoom so we can continue to practice safe distancing while we build new interpersonal relationships. If you are interested in this exciting new program, please email the Rev. Seeing the Sacred: Conversations around Holy Practices Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
 
Join Lisa Brown for our new weekly Zoom conversations with St. Paul's parishioners, friends, and other folks from across the church as we talk about our ministries and sacred life together. So many people are discovering (and rediscovering!) gardening right now, so our first guest on June 10 will be Jerusalem Greer and we'll be talking about the spiritual practice of gardening as well as a broader understanding of seasons - growing seasons, seasons of our lives, and the liturgical season. Jerusalem is the Staff Officer for Evangelism, Reconciliation, Justice & Creation Care of the Episcopal Church and the author of At Home in this Life: Finding Peace at the Crossroads of Unraveled Dreams and Beautiful Surprises and  Homemade Year: The Blessings of Cooking, Crafting, and Coming Together. St. Paul's No Contact Eucharistic Visitor Ministry

As the church continues to meet virtually, St. Paul’s is offering a new way for our parish to receive Eucharist and pray with one another!  Volunteers will bring individually wrapped consecrated hosts to homes and pray a short service together from a safe distance from one another.  In a test run of this new program, I heard stories of families sitting on decks, apartment lobbies and front steps while sharing the body of Jesus together.  While this might seem like a funny scene to imagine, all participants commented that it was a meaningful way to connect in a time when we are all feeling so isolated.  If you would like to volunteer to be trained to bring Eucharist, or if you would like it brought to you, please sign up here.

Join us as we thank our Head Sexton, Bill Higgins, as he moves on to pursue his Real Estate career full-time. His last day at St. Paul’s will be Friday, June 12th. He will be back for a few days later in the summer to help train his replacement. He will be missed!  
Adult Mission Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m.

The June 21 Adult Mission Trip to West Virginia has been canceled, but we still plan to participate in some mission activities this summer and/or later in the fall. We encourage anyone who is interested in joining the conversation to attend the planning meeting on Thursday, June 11 at 7pm on Zoom here.

Join us for the Annual Pig Roast & Summer Fest on Saturday, June 27! This year it will move to a pick up operation and the proceeds will go towards the St. Paul's Covid-19 Response Fund. Orders can be placed here. Please place orders by June 22. This is event is presale only.

 
Youth Pittsburgh Service Week: July 26-August 1

Although our mission trip to Southern West Virginia cannot happen as scheduled, we still have the opportunity to serve  our local community during Pittsburgh Service Week July 26th through August 1st. Pittsburgh Service Week will be an opportunity to live out Christ’s call to love our neighbor right here in Allegheny County by working with local churches and worksites that St. Paul’s has relationships with. This will not only be a work of service, but one of building community through fun activities and prayer. I hope you will be able to join us July 26th through August 1 for Pittsburgh Service Week! Depending on the local and state health advisories, this program will include day and evening activities throughout the week, and we hope that you can commit to be a part of the program in its entirety. Pittsburgh Service Week is open to rising freshman through graduating seniors. We also need adults to chaperone and help serve with us. You will sleep in your home each night. FACE MASKS: MAKE, ASSIST, AND/OR RECEIVE! 

As you know, Governor Wolf and the CDC recommend the wearing of cloth face masks when one has to go out. (Still best to stay home!)  This will help to prevent inadvertent spreading of the virus to store workers or others.  We would like to equip all or our St. Paul’s family.  (Some designs do not even require sewing!)  Look through your sewing supplies to see if you have elastic, which seems to be the limiting factor in some of the designs.  Below are “how to” links. The first one is “no sew”.

There are 3 ways in which to help:

a)    Make masks to donate to St. Paul’s parishioners and to Mt. Lebo police and other first responders.
b)    Donate material and/or elastic or elastic hair ties to sewers
c)    Help to deliver the masks to those who want them

ACCESS TO THE ST. PAUL'S BUILDING


We are limiting access to the building right now. In accordance with health guidelines some employees will be working remotely when possible. If the building is unlocked, only the Mayfair entrance will be open, and we ask you to immediately go and wash your hands in the sink in the kitchen when you enter the building. As many of us are working remotely when possible, please try to use email as the primary form of communication with parish staff. All email addresses are on the parish website.

PASTORAL CARE


Pastoral Care for members of our community – Laura continues to coordinate this aspect of our parish life. If you are healthy and able to help (run errands, offer rides, prepare meals) for members of our parish who are homebound during the pandemic, please send your name, the best way to contact you and how you would like to help to Laura- laura@stpaulspgh.org. If you are in need of anything at this time (meals, rides, errands) please contact the church at the Pastoral Care Hotline! The Pastoral Care Hotline is available 24/7 do not hesitate to call it with any requests: (412) 440-8123. Also, please let Laura and I know if you are sick. We have many more people willing to help, that requests for needs at this time, though that may change in the coming weeks.

Prayer Requests: We would love to hear who we can be praying for! If you have a name that you would like on the prayer list, email the office at office@stpaulspgh.org, use the card in the end of pews or let clergy know. Prayer requests stay on for two weeks, deceased names stay on for one week. Names are prayed during services weekly, and by members of the St. Paul’s Prayer team daily.
