The News: Our first recession in 30 years, but there's a silver lining!

The Australian economy shrank by 0.3% in the 2020 March quarter, although expected many fear the worst is yet to come with the Bureau of Statistics Chief Economist Bruce Hockman saying, “This was the slowest through-the-year growth since September 2009, when Australia was in the midst of the Global Financial Crisis and captures just the beginning of the expected economic effects of COVID-19”.

Despite these dire predictions, Australia’s relatively quick reaction in both the corporate and consumer sectors have allowed us to significantly mitigate the collateral damage of a recession and also be prepared for a prolonged recession. The ASX relaxation of rules associated with equity raising early on has allowed companies to raise enough cash to hopefully brave the current economic downturn and with job keeper payments currently keeping those unemployed due to the virus afloat.

Meet The Team

Funniest AccSoc memory?

This would have to be our internal games night over Zoom! We were required to find certain objects and take photos with them within the shortest amount of time, and it was super funny running around the house trying to find something as specific as a Lightning McQueen tissue box. We also played several games of Skribblio and finished the night with a movie over Netflix party. Shoutout to our HR team for organising such a fun and quarantine-friendly event!

What is your spirit animal?

Why did you join AccSoc?

I joined AccSoc off on a whim, to try and see what university had to offer outside of the classroom. AccSoc has without a doubt made my university experience one to remember! It has provided me a platform to connect with, educate and develop the student community at UNSW, and this in itself has been extremely rewarding. I have also had the privilege of meeting some wonderful people along the way, many of whom I hold very close to my heart. AccSoc has played an imperative role in shaping the woman I am today - it has provided me with a plethora of opportunities to challenge myself, and build upon technical and soft skills necessary for the professional sphere. I've grown in my personal confidence and gained direction in regards to my career path, and I encourage everyone (even those outside of an Accounting major) to join us at one of our events – I would love to meet you!
