Amsterdam UMC cancels CWO pre-test on WMO-obligated research

The board of directors of Amsterdam UMC decided on 27 May 2020, in accordance with the advice of the Amsterdam Research Board, to cancel the previously required CWO pre-test for research complying with Dutch law on Medical Research in Humans. The CWO pre-test was required for research at location VUmc and with this decision, pilots at location AMC are cancelled as well. Department heads and PI's will remain primarily responsible for quality and feasibility of research proposals.

New portal for ACS theses online

The new ACS thesis portal is online and accessible at app.thesisapps.com/acs/theses ». This portal is intended for ACS PhD students to upload a PDF of their thesis to share publicly. PhD students linked to ACS can add their thesis via this Google Form. »

ACS PhD retreat 2021 - Looking for new members

Dear ACS PhD students,

Did you enjoy the first edition of the ACS PhD Retreat 2019? Were you sad that the retreat this year had to be cancelled? Are you enthusiastic about organizing the ACS PhD retreat next year? We are looking for new members to join the ACS PhD Retreat committee 2021!

After the unfortunate cancellation of the ACS PhD retreat this year we are looking for a new committee to organize the retreat again next year. It is a two day retreat with interesting keynotes and workshops, the opportunity for PhD students to practice their (poster) presentation skills, time to meet your colleagues from the ACS and lots of fun. 

So if you are interested in organizing a two day retreat for all the PhD students of the ACS with interesting workshops, lectures and socializing let us know by writing an email to acsretreat@gmail.com

2 JULY: 6th ACS CONFERENCE
Next month, the 6th annual ACS conference will be held in the afternoon via online Teams meeting. This conference will focus on the impact of COVID-19 on ongoing and future research and the view from grant providers. The  precise programme will be announced soon.

25 JUNE                       AI&II WEBINAR COVID-19
On June 25 at 15.00 hrs the Amsterdam Infection & Immunity Institute (AI&II) organizes the webinar: ‘COVID-19: antivirals & vaccines against SARS-CoV-2’ » with a general COVID-19 update by Menno de Jong followed by an update of Martin Grobusch on our ongoing remdesivir clinical trial.

After this Arjan Griffioen will tell something about his research on a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and Hans Zaaijer will give an update on his COVID-19 antibody survey. Besides these talks, the new name and film of our Infection & Immunity research institute will be launched and the laureates of our AI&II Collaboration grant will be announced.

The Macrophage Immunometabolism group at Amsterdam UMC is seeking a  highly driven Post-Doctoral researcher for an NWO-funded research project. POSTDOC CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH CORK

The University College Cork, Ireland, is looking for a post-doc interested in applying, with their help, for an EU Marie-Curie fellowship to work on a cardiovascular project in Cork for 2 years starting in 2021. HARTSTICHTING GRANT UPDATES

The Dutch Heart Foundation postponed the deadline of 2 June, 2020 for the Dekker grant Clinical Established Investigator and Junior Clinical Scientist until a later date after the summer. New eligibility criteria will apply. The new deadline and criteria will be published soon on the Hartstichting website »
AMSTERDAM UMC YOUNG TALENT FUND

The Amsterdam UMC Young Talent Fund offers travel grants for Amsterdam UMC PhD candidates to visit top international research institutes for research or training. The goal is to enable young excellent PhD candidates to do an internship or follow courses at one of the top international research institutes anywhere in the world. The maximum grant is €5.000. A special selection committee assesses all applications.

ACS THESIS APP

As from January 2020, ACS will provide a PhD Thesis app for ACS PhD candidates from Amsterdam UMC graduating in 2020 and 2021. In this ACS Thesis app, all theses from ACS researchers will be bundled and freely available. Using this app you can upload your thesis and make it interactive by adding videos, photos, animations and Google Maps navigation to ceremony and reception. It is also possible to incorporate professional social media and science networks.
This PhD Thesis app replaces the financial support for printing your thesis.

Forum for Young Scientists Workshop: The imposter syndrome
Do you feel like you don't deserve your success? Do you feel like you are not smart enough or good enough for the environment you work in? Or do you have the feeling colleagues/your boss overestimates your performance? This feeling is actually quite common, and it could be you are suffering from what is called "imposter syndrome".On the 11th of June, we will have a workshop on The imposter syndrome, given by Ellis Vyth from bHertz. VIDI GRANT WRITING WORKSHOPS

18 June 2020 & 23 June 2020
Time: 09:00 - 13:00

The deadline for the Vidi 2020 call is the 6th of October 2020. The grants desk will organise a grant writing workshops for candidates that will submit a grant in this call. This workshop will be on Thursday the 18th of June, and on Tuesday the 23rd of June always from 09.00 until approximately 13.00. Please let me know whether you can join this grant writing workshop on the 18th or on the 23rd of June or whether you are flexible and we can choose which date you will join this workshop. If you want to participate in this grant writing workshop you need to fill in the attached Vidi intake form » and send it back to b.jordi@amsterdamumc.nl before the 11th of June. There will be limited places for these workshop, so please be on time if you would like to participate in these workshops.

The grants desk will also, like last year, set up a supportgroup in order to align support with the AMC support system. In order to join this supportgroup please fill in the attached Vidi pre-application form » and send it b.jordi@amsterdamumc.nl on or before the 29th of June.

Be aware that you need an embedding guarantee form signed by the dean of the faculty to be able to send in a Vidi grant. There will be a formal procedure to obtain this signed embedding guarantee, the procedure will be announced soon.

MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIPS

This is a digital two-part workshop specifically designed for applicants of the MSCA individual fellowship (external deadline 9 September 2020). The Horizon2020 Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF) scheme » provides several opportunities for postdocs for a research fellowship in another country or when still within the mobility rule options to stay at the Amsterdam UMC. This Masterclass is a collaboration of the AMC Postdoc Network and Research Office and you will be provided with information on the MSCA-IF opportunities, tips and tricks on writing a successful application, lessons learned from previous years and options for support in preparing your application. Speakers will include an experienced MSCA-IF reviewer and last year’s laureates.

The Masterclass will be online and split into two parts. Participants are expected to attend both sessions: Tuesday 7 July, 9-10:30am and Wednesday 8 July 9-10:30am. Info and registration here ».
