Dear All,
I hope this newsletter finds you well.
Our online lecture series on The Aztecs has been very well received and BEA is planning to continue to deliver some lectures via Zoom until Dec 2020, and perhaps beyond. We would welcome any feedback you have on this subject, in particular:

  • the length of time you are comfortable with attending a Zoom lecture. Would a two hour session with a 15 minute tea break be preferable to a single one hour session?
  • Would you like to see a course run twice a week for its duration, as we are doing at the moment with Aztecs? We could also run sessions weekly making it a 10 week run for a 10 hour course.
  • Do you have a day or days of the week you prefer, and certain times of day you would like us to offer live lectures?

Please email berwickea@gmail.com with any comments and suggestions and we will use your ideas to plan the online programme.

BEA is looking for a Treasurer as our current Treasurer, Jacqui Parkin will step down at the end of July. Full training is available, so if this interests you let us know by emailing berwickea@gmail.com and we will get in touch for a chat about the role.

BEA PROGRAMME
The following online lectures and courses for June are available for booking either as single sessions, or full courses on Eventbrite:

  • 9th - 25th June: 'Travellers to and from the Middle East'. This series of six one-hour lectures by Dr Janet Starkey and Prof Paul Starkey, replaces the lectures which were cancelled earlier in the year. No previous knowledge is assumed and you do not need to have attended the earlier lectures.
  • 10th June: 'Universal Basic Income'. This one hour lecture by Maurice Ward will cover the definition of UBI, its history, and the arguments in favour of and against its introduction.
  • 13th June - 11th July: 'Summer Astronomy'. Dr Adrian Jannetta will be covering basic concepts, practical experience, and the latest developments in a rapidly changing field. (5 sessions).
  • 17th June: The Granary Gallery, Berwick is currently closed but we are offering 'A Virtual Tour of The Glasgow Boys and Girls Exhibition' from The Granary Gallery with a commentary by Prof Maria Chester. This is a free event and it will also be recorded and made available on our website at a later date.
  • 24th June: Richard Kendall delivers a lecture on 'Buster Keaton'. There is the possibility of 6 further lectures on silent cinema if this is well received, supported by Berwick Film Society

Looking ahead over the summer, we will be holding two Zoom art workshops with Gill Walton inspired by The Glasgow Boys and Girls exhibition (GB&G), Andean Civilizations
with Maria Chester, more Film Studies, and a look at the music of Morton Feldman and the Contemporary New York Art scene, details will be available next month.

LOCAL EVENTS
Berwick Visual Arts have provided a link from the Art UK website to some lovely GB&G images to whet your appetite for some BEA GB&G events to be held over the summer, and to keep you going until The Granary Gallery exhibition opens, hopefully in the autumn. https://artuk.org/discover/curations/the-glasgow-boys-and-girls/template/showcase#

It has been organised by James Knox from the Fleming Collection with Art UK and does differ slightly from the exhibition that Berwick Visual Arts are planning for The Granary, due to the number of works that can be shown and the availability of quality images of all the works, but it is a good pre-cursor to the exhibition itself.

The Friends of Berwick Castle Parks are unable to stage real life Open Gardens at this time and have decided to go ‘virtual’ instead. Recent pictures taken in the 20 town gardens which had planned to welcome visitors can be seen from 1st June for several weeks on their website  friendsofcastleparks.org  - please click on the 'Open Gardens' link to enjoy a selection of stunning garden views.

Very Best Wishes
Andrea Butler
