MINISTER'S MESSAGE
GREETINGS FROM REV IRIS

Dear Living Faith Uniting Church Family and Friends

"Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture." Luke 8:6 (NIV)

This picture above taken in Israel provides a glorious vista of an arid land juxtaposed by a fresh, aqua ocean. The harsh dry mountain environment cannot produce lush green grass. Yet the sea boasts ecosystems and reefs teaming with marine life. This very spot speaks to us of the ways of the world in comparison to the ways of God.  We are often tempted to place our bets or hopes on rocky or unstable sources that yield no results. More often than not, these are material in nature.

To the contrary, various passages in the New Testament speak about Jesus walking by the sea. The sea has healing properties, salt is a cleanser and purifier. Water sustains life, and like the waves of the ocean, God's love just keeps rolling towards us. I want to encourage us all to "hang out with Jesus" awhile. Let us walk along the shores of Scripture, dipping our feet into its life-giving water and swimming in its truth. Therein we find the answers and ways through the boulders that so often block our paths.

This last week I was challenged by a sermon that encouraged listeners to list ten things they are grateful for. It was a wonderful exercise and a process that gives us perspective. I want to encourage you to take some time to do the same. It is amazing what we discover through a thankful mindset. Speaking of thanks, we extend our gratitude to Richard this week, who has worked extensively to update our church website and set up our online ministry, including putting together our video services each week. We thank him for his faithful service towards the Kingdom of God and towards us as a community.

We welcome John and Galen Grimwade to our online newsletter recipients. It was lovely to connect with them this week, albeit via phone for the time being. Welcome John and Galen!

I am seeing beautiful rain fall outside the window as I end this greeting - may God's refreshing peace fall on us all in the coming week.

Your friend,
Iris

TIMOTHY KELLER
Christian author, Timothy Keller, announced this week that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Below is an excerpt from his update. He remains inspirational even in affliction.

"Less than 3 weeks ago I didn't know I had cancer. Today I'm headed to the National Cancer Institute ... before beginning chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer next week back in New York City.

I feel great and have no symptoms. It was what doctors call an "incidental pickup," otherwise known as providential intervention. I have terrific human doctors, but most importantly I have the Great Physician himself caring for me. Though we have had times of shock and fear, God has been remarkably present with me through all the many tests, biopsies, and surgery of the past few weeks.

Running the race set before me with joy, because Jesus ran an infinitely harder race, with joy, for me. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

-Tim"
