Hello Indivisibles,
We want real change to happen in policing. Not just a cop kneeling for a photo op, tangible change. Every year Yolo County makes a budget which is a statement of what our community cares about: what we're doing instead of what we're saying. And, while the budget takes a hit during the COVID-19 crisis, while we have to make decisions on what community services must be cut, the Sheriff's Office budget is actually INCREASING. This isn't OK. How can we even think of increasing the money we spend on policing while we're trying to fight the injustice of the police system against Black people? That's not the department that should be getting extra money while other priorities are starved.
The Yolo County Board of Supervisors meets this Tuesday, June 9th at 9am to discuss the budget- including money for the Yolo County Sheriff's office.
The action this week is simply to let the people we elected know that we don't want to rob money from all of our other priorities to give to police. All we have to do is comment- at the meeting, in email, or by phone. Please scroll down to find example public comment/email scripts, meeting times, and links to the meetings.

This is one of the decisions we already made in previous years about what is important in our community. The Davis police department was happy to get a mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle until public outcry on police militarization meant they had to refuse it. (The Woodland police department took it).
We have military equipment for cops, and a budget that is always growing for police while our other priorities get cut. Let's make a different decision.

1. To never again vote to increase the Sheriff's Office funding or to increase the Sheriff department's budget.
2. To propose and vote for a cut from the Sheriff's budget as Yolo County responds to projected COVID-19 shortfalls.
3. To protect and expand current investment in community-led health and safety strategies, instead of investing in police.
4. To do everything in their power to compel all law enforcement agencies to immediately cease enacting violence on community members.
