LaunchBox 2020

This year for the first time since the programme began in 2013, LaunchBox began online, working remotely with 2020’s ten startups. Week One is almost complete after icebreakers, introductions and orientation for all our teams. Prior to kick off, the teams were kept up to date of all developments during this stressful time, with weekly check-ins, remote 1:1 calls, and a variety of other supports provided by the LaunchBox programme manager and Tangent team.

We have another exciting and diverse cohort of startups, all of whom are ready and primed to make as much progress as possible during the three-month programme. Each startup will receive EUR10,000 in funding to progress their idea over the summer, as well as tailored support, networking, mentorship and much more. Thanks as always are due to the programme contributors, many of whom are LaunchBox and/or Trinity alumni, who give their time and expertise so generously to the next generation of innovators.  Week One was jam-packed for our start-ups. Wednesday began with an orientation session, followed by (rather wittily named!) Quaranteam Coffees ,before a webinar with AWS, “Looking towards the Horizon”. You can read about the newest batch of LaunchBox startups below, and get in touch with Alison Treacy (Alison.Treacy@tcd.ie) with any questions.

Customer Discovery Workshop:
As any founder knows, speaking to potential users and/or customers is key when you are developing your product or service. A business that operates in a vacuum is not going to survive long. Rather than rely entirely on online surveys, LaunchBox displayed innovation and agility, asking people to donate an hour of their time to take part in a Customer Development exercise for our 10 LaunchBox teams - with come to an online discussion group run by a LaunchBox startup, and answer any questions honestly!

The discussion groups will take place on Monday 8 June from 12.30pm-1.30pm.

COVID-19 Workplace Wellness Working Group Formed

In mid-May, Trinity announced that the target date for returning to campus had been set for the 10th August.

Responding to this, Tangent established the Workplace Wellness Group in order to devise a plan of action with regards to returning and the measures that will need to happen before we can safely return. There are many actions that need to happen however we will continue to follow government and college advice and guidelines. Consequently, the group is meeting on a weekly basis. Planning has already begun to ensure that a robust plan will be in place with the safety of staff as the number one priority.

The working group aims to ensure our safety as we tentatively look forward to returning to the Space. Between now and August 10th each member of staff will have the opportunity to raise concerns and challenges about returning. This will happen with you and your line manager and will be scheduled over the coming months. This will ensure that concerns are addressed and a safe return to the office.

This is subject to change due the uncertainty of current situation but we will adapt and be proactive.

From Singapore to Tangent:
Innovation in Healthcare Module Now Complete

Innovation in Healthcare has never been more urgent. Last month, Tangent delivered a module entitled Creative Thinking and InnovationIn collaboration with the departments of Physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin and Singapore Institute of Technology.

This programme, previously blended, was successfully delivered 100% online due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel and we have 150+ students in attendance. The programme is being delivered by a combination of academics, innovation experts and industry professionals.

Designed so that participants can apply their learnings in a real world setting, students used Design Thinking to generate and pitch creative solutions to challenges associated with Covid-19 to a panel of experts. For example, some students tackling the global shortage of personal protective equipment while others look at ICU capacity or post-Covid rehabilitation.

This programme builds on Tangents mission to partner with Trinity schools to delivery innovation and entrepreneurship education programmes nationally and internationally in domain specific areas (e.g. Healthcare, Climate, Digital).

Healthcare Innovation:

We are delighted to announce the roll-out of a brand-new standalone Healthcare Innovation module (5 ECTS) for PhD/MRes students. This module is being run in collaboration with our funding partner, EIT Health, and will take place in late June/early July.

The focus of this module is on applying creativity and innovation to specific challenges in the healthcare technology sector through design thinking and UX design. Students will identify a challenge currently affecting the healthcare sector during the Covid-19 pandemic, or a challenge they envisage affecting this sector in a post pandemic world,

and use design thinking and UX design to develop an innovation solution to address the challenge.

This is an amazing opportunity for healthcare and medical research students to research and develop solutions that can have real-world applications, and can contribute to global efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. We, at Tangent – Trinity’s Ideas Workspace are extremely excited to facilitate the development of these varied and valuable projects and to allow our students to grow and fulfil their innovative potential.

Undergraduate Certificate Recruitment:

This September, Tangent is proud to once more offer the Undergraduate Certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship (10 ECTS) - open to 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates registered at  @tcddublin from every School and discipline. We are pleased to report that our targeted recruitment drive has produced 54 expressions of interest in the last week alone!

Black Stone Launchpad Alumni Article: Tangent & COVID-19 Techstarts Startup Weekend

In the first months after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, many people found themselves frozen. Action seemed impossible under the weight of all the unknowns. People wondered, how are we supposed to protect ourselves and our families? What will this mean for our jobs and our futures? What happens next? How can I help if I can’t leave my home?

The answer to this last question came for many Trinity College students, alumni, and staff in the form of entrepreneurship. At the end of April, Techstars sponsored a global virtual Unite to Fight COVID-19 Startup Weekend, with thousands of participants from 60 countries around the world, including Ireland. Trinity College Dublin, which has the leading entrepreneurship programme in Ireland, had a particularly impressive showing, thanks to the Blackstone LaunchPad powered by Techstars initiative located on campus. Of the approximately 120 participants, organisers, and mentors involved with Ireland’s COVID Startup Weekend, more than 25 were Trinity students and alumni. Even more Trinity College students signed up initially but had to drop out because of exams; they requested another Startup Weekend this summer when they’re out of school.

Trinity College Dublin has long emphasized the power of entrepreneurship. Students, alumni, and faculty have access to Trinity Tangent, which is the the school’s hub of innovation and entrepreneurship. Tangent offers everything from dedicated coursework and education on entrepreneurship to mentoring, support, and incubation of ideas through programs like Blackstone Launchpad, which gives students access to the Techstars network.

Joseph Lanzilotta, Program Manager for Tangent’s Blackstone LaunchPad, was excited to learn about the COVID Startup Weekend, leading him both to volunteer as a mentor and to spread the word to Tangent and Launchpad students. In the beginning of March, Lanzilotta created Tangent TV, a series of webinars that walk through the Techstars toolkit that students typically access through Launchpad. “I made this so we could get a lot more online contact for everyone at home,” Lanzilotta explains. “A lot of the students who watched Tangent TV were in the mindset of developing new ideas or already working on new ideas, so when [I told them about COVID Startup Weekend], they thought ‘here’s something that could apply.’”

It was through Lanzilotta that Trinity student Colm Flynn found out about the weekend — where he ended up on the winning team, Fever Finder. When Flynn read Lanzilotta’s announcement, he said he initially wasn’t sure he could disappear onto the computer for a full 54 hours. He recalls speaking to his wife: ”She said, ‘What would be doing anyway? We’re locked in here!’ so I signed up.”

FeverFinder is a company that will use thermometer strips to make it safer for people to go back to work. Employers will give their staff thermometer strips, which you place on your forehead to take your temperature. You then log the temperature reading in an app, which would inform employers if your temperature permits you to work. This not only will help employees feel more comfortable returning to work, but it will also help governing agencies track the virus by noticing fever clusters.

Flynn is currently pursuing his post-graduate degree in Innovation and Enterprise Development at Trinity College Dublin. Through the program, he has access to the newest thinking around entrepreneurship and has been a particular fan of Tangent TV. Flynn realized that he not only wants to use his 20+ years of experience to start up his own business, but also he wants to do something in social innovation. “That’s where things like FeverFinder are really interesting and relevant. I never would’ve been able to find these kinds of opportunities if not for Techstars.” Flynn adds that, by gaining access to Techstars through the Blackstone LaunchPad, he has found the tools “to give some meat on the bone of the idea” and turn it into something real.

So, what comes next for FeverFinder? Flynn says, “The U.K. just announced that temperature checks will be required before people can go to work. There’s a demand for this type of service.” Flynn is in the process of sourcing thermometer strips that are CE and FDA compliant. He went to eight pharmacies near home looking for strips with the CE stamp of approval, finally found one that was branded with Pepa Pig, and read through the tiny print leaflet to find the supplier in Taiwan, with whom he’s now in contact. The other FeverFinder team members are working on the app and website. As the winner of the COVID Startup Weekend, Fever Finder will be able to pitch to Elk Stone and NDRC, and hopefully go to market soon.

The COVID Startup Weekend led to more teams going forward with plans to pitch to VCs and incorporate a business, and more interest by potential investors to jump in. O’Keeffee said of the weekend: “It really sparked people to get up, get out, get into it, and strike while the iron’s hot.

Regional IED: Recent Alumnus Success Story!

We would like to congratulate a graduate of our PG Cert in Innovation and Enterprise Development, John Commins of Blackcastle Farm, for being accepted onto Aldi’s GROW programme with his 1% Beef Sausages. Earlier this month, John got in touch, and Tangent posted about his product on social media. This week, John got in touch again - happy to report that his product has sold out in stores across the country! We wish him every success!
