Did you know that China has a secret police force dedicated to harassing and abducting Falun Gong adherents? It's part of the Chinese Communist Party's effort to erase the practice from the country. It’s been likened to the Gestapo and was created by Jiang Zemin on June 10, 1999. That’s why it’s called the "6-10" office.
As we approach the anniversary of its inception, we invite you to learn more about the agency and its victims. For over two decades, 6-10 officers have been abducting innocent spiritual believers and torturing them to try to force them into giving up the Falun Gong meditation and spiritual practice. Twenty-one years after its creation, the agency's fortunes may be changing amid Chinese Communist Party infighting. But its brutal impact on people's lives continues to be feltthroughout China, and not only by Falun Gong.
Hao Fengjun (above, left), a former police officer of the 6-10 Office in Tianjin, sought political asylum in Australia after he fled China in February, 2005. He no longer wanted to be involved in the persecution of Falun Gong and other religious groups. Relating one incident, Hao says: "There were three female practitioners brought back to my police station. They were in their forties and fifties. All three were interrogated by our criminal investigation team. In the next couple of days of interrogation, I could hear extremely tragic crying and screaming every time I went to work. I later heard from a colleague that they received orders to use all means to force Falun Gong practitioners to reveal their names and family addresses." READ THE FULL STORY
The international reach of the Chinese Communist Party and the 6-10 Office was first revealed by Chen Yonglin (above, right), the former first secretary of the Chinese Consulate in Sydney, Australia. Chen dramatically defected to Australia in 2005. He described during an interview that a 6-10 official came from China to the Chinese embassy in Australia to inspect their work in suppressing Falun Gong in Australia, and that 6-10 Office involvement overseas was deemed crucial. Chen testified before the U.S. Congress that the top daily priority of every Chinese consulate and embassy around the world is to systematically “wage war” against Falun Gong outside China. Silicon Valley resident Ms. Gong Xiaoyan has pleaded with American officials to save her father, a Falun Gong practitioner, from persecution in China. In 2018, he was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for his beliefs. He is a retired Chinese colonel and former deputy chief of staff at Shandong Province Reserve Artillery Brigade.
During his decades-long persecution at the hands of Chinese authorities, Mr. Gong Piqi was kept in a brainwashing center run by Qingdao City’s 6-10 office. He was forced to listen and read propaganda defaming Falun Gong. Gong recalled visits to her father during that time. “I was crying inside. My dad’s hair turned white, he needed support to walk or stand, and his hands were shaking.” Her mother was also serving a prison sentence for refusing to give up faith in the principles of Falun Gong, truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. The 6-10 Office was established by former Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin on June 10, 1999. Jiang’s orders for the new bureau? “Immediately organize forces,” “form battle strategies,” and “get fully prepared for the work of disintegrating [Falun Gong].”
Copies of Jiang’s speech about the 6-10 Office were immediately circulated to every level of China’s bureaucracy, telling cadres they “must cooperate” closely with the 6-10 and its affiliates. Aided by the fact that all Chinese judges were Communist Party members, Jiang essentially placed the agency above the law. READ MORE
