  • Conducted an additional “test” GoToWebinar with additional equipment in preparation for the June 16, 2020 Hybrid CMT/Physical Quorum Council Meeting. With our limited resources we are confident the system will perform as expected. We are aware of one significant vulnerability: additional devices in the Council Chambers which are logged into the webinar will likely cause audio feedback. This disruption will be minimized by signage on the doors to the Council Chambers: “Please do not enter the Council Chambers with a device logged into the virtual City Council meeting/webinar. This will likely cause an audio feedback.”

Culture + Community Affairs

"Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." -Martin Luther King Jr.

Coincidentally, last weekend, the City's Interim City Manager, some Council Members, some Staff + their families participated in the March for Justice alongside thousands of members of our community.

This year at camp will be the first year of the Future Leaders Program, a program designed for teens ages 13-15 to be camp leaders and helpers at camp. The goal for this program is to build the skills it takes to one day be a Summer Camp Counselor. Ben and Randy, two former campers themselves, will be our Future Leaders this summer and we are looking forward to having them be positive role models for the younger campers. A few spots remain so if you want to join in the fun, contact the Leisure Services Office ASAP. The following spots are still available as of 6/11/20:

With those funds, new scoreboards that can be used without touching, balls for youth lessons, and a new ball machine (for instructing and the general public to use) were purchased.

Public Works Services

This week, the City of Cape Canaveral Public Works Services Staff have been working alongside the Canaveral Fire Rescue (CFR) discussing and identifying the City’s confined space areas to ensure adequate equipment and that all safety measures are met.

A confined space has one or more of the following characteristics:
  • Contains, or has the potential to contain, a hazardous atmosphere
  • Contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant
  • Has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor, which slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross-section
  • Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard
Prior to City staff entering any confined space, the plant superintendent notifies the CFR with the entry details including length of time. This informs the CFR allowing them to have staff on standby in case an emergency arises. Periodically, if a confined entry is for a long duration, the CFR will stop by to ensure the safety of the staff.

“Together as a team we can be proactive ensuring safety for our employees, staff, and citizens”, Chief Quinn, CFR.

Sustainability

This past week Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Essential State Infrastructure Bill into law. This landmark electric vehicle (EV) roadmap legislation will help to create a master plan for DC fast-charging (Level 3) infrastructure along Florida’s interstate corridor system, including nearby I-95. The law acknowledges the risks of climate change and identifies electric transportation as a means to combat it. The new law also tasks specific state agencies to identify barriers and opportunities to advance electric vehicle (EV) adoption, including legislative and policy recommendations and requires an interim report at the end of 2020 with a final report by July 2021.
