To our Duke Physician-Scientist Community:
The Duke Office of Physician-Scientist Development (OPSD) stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion. We vehemently oppose racism and prejudice in all its forms and stand in solidarity with our African-American trainees, faculty, and colleagues as we honor the memory of George Floyd and countless other victims of police brutality. We strive to actively educate ourselves on systemic and structural racism and to identify actions we can take to combat any implicit bias, discrimination, or racism in the training environment.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential as we work toward realizing the OPSD vision, "Transforming the Future of Medicine with a New Generation of Physician-Scientists". We are committed to empowering our students, trainees, and faculty—especially during these extraordinarily difficult times.
As part of our continued efforts in this area, in collaboration with the School of Medicine Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advancement, and Leadership in the Sciences (IDEALS) Office, we have established a Diversity in STEM Coalition comprised of institutions across the Southeast including several Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This coalition is working to develop equitable and sustainable partnerships to support a diverse new generation of biomedical research leaders and to ensure that today’s mentors are appropriately trained in cultural awareness.
Please reach out to us at OPSD@dm.duke.edu to share how we can better promote diversity, equity, and inclusion as a physician-scientist community.
