Rabbi’s Message

I have been asked in the past week to sign onto many statements and participate in a great deal of advocacy as a white (privileged) Jewish leader. I have been witness to many discussions about whether or not Jews are “really” white. Those discussions take for granted that the Jews in question are light-skinned and (usually) of Ashkenazi descent. Just as we are currently reckoning with the need to uplift the voices and experiences of people of color, I want to uplift the reality and voices of Jews of color, including my own colleague Rabbi Sandra Lawson, the writers at TribeHerald, and Yavilah McCoy.

As this week’s parashah attests, the Jewish community has never been immune to racism, but we can and must face it together.
