Creating Quality, May 2020, Devoted to Sharing the Quality Improvement Initiatives at Several Psychiatric Facilities

The journal highlights the experiences of three facilities that had taken significant steps to improve care, the underlying documentation which is the evidence of that care, and the development of clinically useful tools to assist the clinical staff with staying on-track with best practices. NRI staff authored two articles on how to spread the word and one article on how to actively engage clinical staff in quality improvement. The journal concludes with a Call to Action to share the vital learning that comes from local quality initiatives that could benefit the wider psychiatric community in promoting the best practices for both patient care and improved outcomes. State-by-State Breakdown of 130 Rural Hospital Closures

Thirty-three states have seen at least one rural hospital shut down since 2010, and the closures are heavily clustered in states that have not expanded Medicaid under the ACA, according to the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Read more.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event. Nearly everyone will experience a range of reactions after trauma, yet most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Men's Health Week is June 10-16, 2020

Men with mental illnesses are less likely to receive mental health treatment and are more likely to die by suicide than women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Twenty-nice organizations, known as bridge organizations, are participating in the Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Model from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CDC Releases COVID-19 Guidance Regarding Individuals with Disabilities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released several COVID-19 guidance documents regarding individuals with disabilities. Learn more.  

Illinois Sees Increase in Overdose Deaths Due to Fentanyl and COVID-19

An article published in ProPublica discusses a recent increase in overdose deaths in Cook County, Illinois. According to the publication’s analysis of medical examiner death records, after years of gradual decreases in overdose deaths, more than twice as many people have died or are suspected to have died of opioid overdoses in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year. HHS Updates its CARES Act Provider Relief Fund FAQs

Last week, HHS updated its CARES Act Provider Relief Fund Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). The largest change is the update of the FAQs to conform to the new deadline of 90 days to attest to the payment before HHS considers the provider to have (by default) attested by retaining the funds. APA Releases Guidance on Admittance, Discharge of Psychiatric Patients During COVID-19

The APA Board of Trustees has issued guidance on how hospitals should manage patients in psychiatric inpatient settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Read more.   

Use of Seclusion, Restraint in Hospitals Drops, But Better Data Needed to Get Complete Picture

Rates of seclusion and restraint at American hospitals, including psychiatric hospitals, fell between 2013 and 2017, at least among those with the highest rates. For-profit hospitals appear to use seclusion and restraint much less than nonprofit and government-owned facilities, according to a report in Psychiatric Services in Advance. Read more.
