Kia ora Kāpiti

We've done it, Kāpiti. How good does it feel to be at Level 1? Our team of 5 million has done an amazing job – well done for playing your part! We need to keep it up now; stay home if you're not feeling well, keep a diary of where you've been, and keep on washing those hands. It's time to help our local business community get back on their feet.

Ka pai Kāpiti!

Getting back to level one is great news and Kāpiti Coast District Mayor K Gurunathan is very proud of the way the community responded to the measures necessary to fight off COVID-19. He says people have endured massive disruption to their lives but it has been well worth it.

“I want to say a big thank you to our health care workers and everyone who helped keep essential services running in order to keep our community safe. Now we must look to do what we can to help those people and businesses who are suffering because of the fallout from the pandemic.

“There are a few things we all still need to remember to do. Stay home if you are unwell and seek medical advice, keep track of where you’ve been and keep up the hygiene standards. It’s also important that we continue to show aroha and kindness and look after each other.”

Mayor Guru took part in a thank you video from the Region’s Mayors, which you can watch online

Tips on how you can do your bit to help prevent flooding and protect your property and community.

Time to check your gutters

Winter is here, Kāpiti! With the cold usually comes the rain – and that means stormwater. We’re out and about every day doing our bit to manage our stormwater network and prevent flooding where possible, but we can’t be everywhere – so here’s a few tips on how you can do your bit to help prevent flooding and protect your property:

  • maintain trees on your property
  • clear away leaves and branches
  • clear your gutters of twigs/leaves,
  • check all your drainpipes and spouting after storms.
You can also check out our video for tips.

It's dog registration time

Next week we’ll be mailing out 2020/21 dog registration forms to existing dog owners. We’re required by law to ensure all dogs over three months old in our district are registered.

Registration fees go towards services that help make sure dogs are cared for, and keep our communities safe for everyone.

If you’re re-registering your dog, you can complete your registration online. If you’re registering your dog for the first time, or prefer doing it in person, visit one of our service centres

Dogs must be registered by 5pm on Friday 31 July 2020. Find out more on our website

Bringing business ideas to life

Budding Kāpiti businesses and entrepreneurs can register for a free start-up programme aimed at bringing great business ideas to life. The Pop-Up Business School, a comprehensive 10-day course, covers everything from starting a business to online sales to networking. It’s not just new businesses that can benefit – if you’re a small business facing change, this course can help you too.

Now in its third year in Kāpiti, the programme has supported some exciting new businesses, with 60% of participants in 2019 having either started, or in the process of starting, a business. Spots are limited to 75 participants so register now

A deluge of library returns

Our library staff have processed a whopping 23,287 returned items over the last three weeks, which equates to a returned item each for half of Kāpiti's entire population!

Each returned book was quarantined for a minimum of three days before being put back on the shelves, as an extra safety precaution against COVID-19.

Our active library community turned to our digital resources during the lockdown period, with a 500% increase in new users accessing eBooks and eAudio through our free Axis360 platform in April.

Sports Bank reopens

With the return to sport, our sports bank is now also open!

If you or your children need help with equipment to get back on the sports field contact our local sports bank and they can help you out.

Likewise, If you have good sports equipment that is gathering dust feel free to donate it to Kāpiti Coast Sports Bank (KCSB) bins around Kāpiti so they can pass it on to local families in need. Let's get out there, and enjoy all Kāpiti has to offer.
