Sinkhole Opens up Near Pantheon Exposing Underground Roman World

May 16, 2020 Steve Palace

A sinkhole near the Pantheon has dramatically exposed ancient Roman paving slabs. The hole opened up in front of the Pantheon in Rome late last month. Around 10 sq ft wide and over 8 ft deep, it’s the latest in a series of such events.  With people out of harm’s way, focus naturally shifted to the historical goodies beneath. “Around 40 of the travertine marble cobblestones, called sanpietrini, gave way when the hole appeared on the Piazza della Rotonda, between the fountain and the Pantheon itself” writes The Local. Travertine is sedimentary rock and the perfect material for a sinkhole.

Also made of travertine are the 7 slabs in question, dating back 2,000 years. They are thought to have been designed by Marcus Agrippa, architect and statesman. Experts believe the stones “were created around the same time that the Pantheon was built, from 27 B.C. to 25 B.C” says Live Science, referring to Rome’s special superintendent Daniela Porro.

It’s the second time the “imperial” slabs have made an appearance. When the Piazza had service lines installed back in the 1990s, their presence was noted after the ground was dug up. This latest airing however was totally unplanned!

Challenge
Concrete pipe sections below State Route 18 in Ohio had begun to shift and the deteriorating joints raised concerns of infiltration. A solution was needed that would not affect the above traffic or a sinkhole could stop traffic completely.
 Engineered Solution
17 HydraTite seals were needed to repair all the affected joints. Standard wide, extra-wide and double-wide seal widths were used at different joints as needed to provide the most appropriate solution. All of the seals were 72” in diameter.
 Scope
HydraTech inspected the culvert to decide the most economic seal widths to use on each joint. The project required concrete patching and grinding to prepare for the seals. The pipe still had some water flow, but because the HydraTite seal can be installed even underwater, the installation was not hindered by this. Finally, 17 HydraTite seals of various widths had to be installed throughout the pipe. Once HydraTech arrived, the installation was completed in only 2 days. The total turnaround was completed in less than two weeks after the purchase order was received.
Solution
The HydraTite seals eliminated infiltration at all joints. The HydraTite Solution enabled a trenchless repair at a fraction of the cost of alternatives. The above traffic was not affected by the culvert rehabilitation. The HydraTite seal proved to be an economical and effective in situ repair solution.
