TERM 2 - WEEK 7 - 2020
From the Principal's Desk

Year 12 Reports
I have written in the past about the purpose of education and that the ultimate goal of education is the holistic development of the individual. One of the reasons that Father Donnelly made the decision to name our College after Saint John Henry Newman is because of his progressive philosophy of education. Saint Newman has been attributed as having made the statement, “For why do we educate except to prepare for the world”. The beauty of this statement is that it does not attempt to specify what education should look like, but it does place the emphasis of education on the holistic preparation of the individual, so that they may take their place in the life experiences that lie ahead of them.

Communication and feedback are integral elements of the education process and have a role to play in the holistic development of the individual. School reports are just one example of the type of communication and feedback that students receive whilst they are at school. Over the past week I have been reading the Year 12 reports and not only have I been impressed by the outstanding achievements of many of our students, I have also been impressed by the detail and thoughtfulness of the feedback and advice that is being given to students by their teachers. I encourage all students, families and care givers, to read the reports and where appropriate, take on the advice given when they receive them next week. They are just one element of the holistic educational process, but they are an important one.

Reports of course also have other purposes and as Year 12 students enter the final phase of their school based education, it is important that they use them to help build a record of their achievements that can be used with their post school options. These reports will not only be evidence of achievement but they can be a focal point for discussion that will take place when the Year 12 Pastoral Care teachers contact families over the coming weeks. This reporting period represents an opportunity for students and families to review progress and to set goals aimed at achieving the best possible outcomes for the final phase of the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

Have a great weekend.

Student Services News

Hi Newman family

I hope you are all well after another busy week. At Newman College this week Year 12 continued on with their Workplace Learning Program and Year 11 began receiving their workplace contracts for their next placement. It is an important placement for Year 11 as many students were unable to complete a placement during the COVID-19 period, so make sure that you are up to date with all of your IBL work and ask your IBL teacher if you have any concerns or questions.

As we are now back to a normal face to face classroom program, it is a timely reminder that students are required to have a fully charged device for their lessons. Using a mobile phone is not the best option and often causes distractions within the classroom. Please ensure that you assist your teachers in making the most of your learning opportunities at the College.

Looking ahead to next week, Year 12 will have their subject award ceremony on Friday. The awards recognise all of the hard work students have completed within their subjects this semester. Year 11 will begin working in Pastoral Care to organise themselves for the activities day they will participate in at the College in Week 10. More details of this will be forthcoming in the weeks leading up to the fun day.

Have a great week everyone and remember “that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”.

Computer Applications (CAD/CAM) News

Year 11
With the sudden change to remote delivery that we have recently experienced, Year 11 CAD students are to be congratulated on their efforts to navigate zoom meetings and online tutorials to adapt to the ‘web based’ version of SketchUp for schools CAD program and complete a series of CAD drawing exercises, culminating in a design project which utilised their 3D CAD modelling skills.

Special mentions to Bodhi Grima, Lachlan Harris and Logan Norton on their designs below.

Year 12
The need to move online learning had very little impact on Computer Applications students. At the start of Term 2, Year 12 were involved in a unit of work using the Onshape CAD software. This software is perfectly suited to online learning as it is completely cloud-based, does not require any downloaded software and allows easy collaboration between users.

Students were able to continue with small tasks to develop their skills.  The work was explained through a series of short tutorial videos and posted online. Some students found this method of delivery more appealing than being in the classroom as they were able to adjust the pace of the learning to suit their needs.

Since returning to classes full time, students have been able to extend on these skills and incorporate complex elements such as assemblies and animations.

As the year continues students now move their to focus to a personal interest project that will demonstrate their breadth of learning and skills in the CAD/CAM environment. I look forward to working with the students as they investigate, design and create their own projects.

Workplacement News

Bridie Caller is another of our Newman students who continued attending workplacement throughout the COVID-19 lockdown. Bridie is a Business Services student with a School-based Traineeship at Supalook Smash Repairs.

As well as working towards competencies related to her course, the pandemic gave Bridie valuable insight into the importance of infection control in the office setting. Enclosed environments, in which people are interacting in close proximity with one another, are at particular risk of the spread of pathogens.

Newman congratulates Bridie on her role in keeping the economy alive through the COVID-19 shutdown. We are proud of her efforts and we are certain this appreciation is shared by her employers and clients.
Student Flu Vaccination - Expression of Interest

The College has received an offer from Plunketts Pharmacy in Port Macquarie to provide flu vaccinations in a clinic on site at our College for students and staff.

As the Government strongly encourages as many Australians as possible to get a Flu Vaccination this year, particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we thought this may be a convenient service for our students. (Students doing workplacement in an Aged Care facility are now required by law, to have the flu vaccination also).

In order to arrange this clinic we are requesting an expression of interest from families.

The cost is $23, which will be directly deposited into Plunketts Pharmacy account.

The proposed date is Monday 22 June (Week 9) during lunch.

PLEASE INDICATE IN THE LINK BELOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER TO RECEIVE A FLU VACCINATION

Counselling is a process of talking about and working through what is on your mind or what is going on in your life. Through talking and getting things out, you are often able to find some clarity for your concerns. In this current situation it may be helpful to talk about what is happening for you.

Everything in the counselling session is kept private and confidential, however if we believe you are going to cause harm to yourself, or someone else or could be involved in a highly illegal activity, our counsellor or teachers are mandated to report.

Our College counsellor, Linda McGuire is located upstairs in the Futures Hub – Pathways and Careers area.

There is no doubt that Year 12 will be one of the most difficult periods of your child's schooling life. Not only is this a stressful time for our sons and daughters, but parents also tend to ride a roller coaster of emotions during this time.

This guide will outline some research and strategies on how you can provide emotional support to your child. It will also include practical suggestions that have been tested and endorsed by psychologists, counsellors, teachers and parents alike.
