Item for Parents

Feel free to copy this section to keep your parents regularly updated.
Do you have a home assistant such as Alexa or Echo in your home?  Are you considering purchasing one?
This article helps you think about what is possible, what can go wrong and the decisions you need to make about  safe use in the home.
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/answers-to-parents-top-questions-about-smart-speakers

It includes information about how young children can make use of them, hidden costs in using them and privacy settings.

Use the list of things that can go wrong to help your family agree how your home assistant can be enjoyed safely.

Take part in our pupil wellbeing project

The eLIM team are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for Somerset Primary schools to take part in a new pilot project, promoting pupil well-being through the award-winning GoBubble platform.

Already used in schools in 39 countries around the world, this free to join platform is a safer, healthier and kinder, digital community for all children, which allows them to interact with other pupils or teachers at their school and rewards kindness. GoBubble also offers the opportunity to collaborate with peers and professionals across the world. It can support any curriculum topic and seamlessly connects with other platforms.

We are inviting schools to be involved in our GoBubble pilot, trialling the platform with their pupils and being part of a project investigating its impact on wellbeing.

Online safety concerns during school lockdown

eSafe contributed to the Staying Safe Online during Home Schooling the live event which is one of the video replays you can watch from Cornerstone Academy Trust.  Ben McGrath describes the picture of what children and young people are doing now that could put them at risk.

Do watch this from 38.17 minutes to 53 minutes.  You may have time to watch the whole video but this section sets out a picture of trends in the use of technology since lockdown. It is based on monitoring of school devices that are being  used at home by learners.

360safe updated

The www.360safe.org.uk online safety review tool has been updated.  Schools that have used the tool previously will see immediate changes when you log in.  For all but the new monitoring aspect, your chosen levels and commentary have been transferred from the nearest equivalent aspect in the old tool.  The exception is the new monitoring aspect which will have the chosen level from the old Filtering and Monitoring aspect but not the commentary.  You can find your commentary for this aspect when you choose which version of your review you want to see.  The information can then be copied and pasted to the new tool and edited as needed.

To see the version of the tool for each date where you have updated your level and commentary:
  1. Choose Reports
  2. Choose Detailed Summary Report
  3. Click on the drop down arrow nex to date
  4. Select the version of the report you would like to see

The four elements in the tool are:
  • Policy and Leadership
  • Education
  • Technology
  • Outcomes
There are now 21 aspects instead of 28 with much of the repetitiveness removed.  The level statements 'have all been updated to reflect the changes in technology, behaviours, legislation and statutory guidance.'  The radar of aspects gives you an immediate picture of where you are in the development of the online safety part of safeguarding.
The red line is the recommended level, blue is the current national level and green is the level your school has selected for each aspect.

Get in touch with the team if you would like to arrange a remote meeting for us to facilitate your review of online safety with 360safe.  Alternatively, we will be offering remote training for the new tool in the autumn term.

Schools can be assessed for accreditation based on the previous version up to October 2020, but this will use your evidence as it existed at the end of March.  We advise that schools use this new version to complete their preparation for accreditation.

Updated Advisory Incident Flowchart

We have updated our incident flowchart.  A school can use this for guidance on action to be taken should a safeguarding issue related to online safety be reported or a concern be raised.  We have only made small amendments based on experiences we have talked through with schools.  In particular, we have tightened up the steps when an illegal activity is disclosed.

Find an opportunity to share and discuss the 2020 Online Safety Incident Flowchart with staff.

New resources published for primary and secondary

  1. Childnet have published six new videos which could be used as part of online learning for 6 - 9 year olds.  The videos are based on the SMART rules and can be watched and talked about within families.  Some follow up activities are suggested.
  2. Think U Know have published a new education resource on the consensual and non-consensual sharing of nude images among young people.  Send me a pic? includes three sessions for 12-14 year olds.

Annual report from Report Harmful Content

The UK Safer Internet Centre has published a blog post giving an overview of the Report Harmful Content annual report.  It includes three common trends that were identified (these are taken from the blog):
  • A combination of impersonation, bullying and harassment and privacy violation. This trend disproportionally affected women and intersected with offline domestic violence and coercive control.
  • A combination of abuse, threats and hate-speech. Within this, the most common type of hate-speech reported was racism/xenophobia.
  • Clients inadvertently viewing harmful content (e.g. violence or pornography) rather than being victim to or witnessing targeted, harmful behaviour.
www.reportharmfulcontent.com is a website where different types of harmful content can be reported and advice is available.

Remote Online Safety CPD and Workshops

The team is now providing remote online safety CPD and works through Microsoft Teams.

This could be an hour and a half online session of CPD for the staff and governors within a school, or for a group of schools where the total number of participants can be up to 20.

It could be an hour and a half workshop with a group of learners and their teacher.

Get in touch with the team for further information and to set a date.  There is no cost for subscribers to eLIM Education Technology Team if you choose to use your included half day visit in this way.

Online safety workshops are available for parents and carers through Parentzone.  Google and Parentzone are also offering Live assemblies for your learners.
