June Newsletter

Sat Naam dear all, and a blessed Summer's Solstice to you all!

I hope that you and your families and communities have continued to be physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually well since the last newsletter in May. I can only reiterate what I already wrote then: I hope that you are able to draw on your practice to lift yourself up on the moments & days, maybe sometimes even  entire weeks that you are not feeling well. I hope there are moments (and I hope there are many of them) that you feel you are thriving in certain areas of your life, if maybe less so in others. I hope you are able to find strength inside on the days when everything feels overwhelming and too much. I hope you find it in you to be kind to yourself. I hope you can sometimes just sit and breathe and be present and be grateful for what there is.

The times are intense and challenging and I believe unlike anything most of us have seen in this lifetime. I too have been feeling a lot of that and having to sit and process a lot of that.
As Sikhs we have been commemorating the 1984 genocide on Sikhs that started on June 1st 1984, and it's been a time of sitting with the memories of a lot of extreme violence, persecution and cruelty towards the community I am part of and - very close to home - towards the family I married into in India. Persecution of Sikhs in India continues to this day, and this year's start of the commemoration suddenly also brought to light a 3-month censorship that had been in place on social media on the hashtag #Sikh, which caused even more upset to our community.
Many more layers were added to our trying to raise awareness of the Sikh genocide and persecution when in the midst of the "10 Days of Terror" commemorations George Floyd was murdered with a nonchalance that was blood-chilling. The consequent rise in consciousness and call for justice re: #BlackLivesMatter, and the calling out -- loudly, by so many voices, but oh so late... -- of systemic racism towards all people of colour in the US and, closer to home, in the UK and Europe, created a space for me personally of going through quite an intense process of peeling back layers, of understanding my own white privilege, and of realising how I only really became aware of the full extent of my white privilege when I became a Sikh - a visibly very recognisable one - with all the repercussions that brought with it and the systemic racism I suddenly became subjected to for the past 10 years. And in all of that I turned 41 - something that we don't celebrate, due to the loss and violence we are remembering in the family and community each year in June.

My social media walls have been very political this month (they are every June when we remember the Sikh genocide, but this year I felt it so much more myself), and I am still sitting with the parts for an important piece that I want to write on white privilege and how I was suddenly catapulted into an acute and profound awareness of it only when I - without knowing this would have such an effect - seemed to have given up on (the full extent of) it when I became a Sikh. (I do not claim I don't have white privilege anymore -- I do, and knowing I do is exactly why I try to use it). Wearing a turban and Kirpan in one stroke changed so much, and I only then really came to realise the privilege I had had until then. Many memories and instances are still surfacing and coming back to light, and so that full post will still have to wait. But when I lived in Philadelphia in the US for 6 months in 2011, just after becoming a Sikh, I was immediately plunged into a whole new world. At one point I was called a racial slur and then had a car suddenly swerve onto the pavement trying to drive right into me and a Sikh friend. We managed to dive out of harm's way, but it was one of - unfortunately so many - instances of racist violence I have come across living in Belgium, the UK and the US, and travelling in different European countries. I've been called a Paki, been nearly run over in the UK as well by a group of racists, been detained in airports, been specifically signaled out as a 'terrorist threat' on a flight from London to Philadelphia by the captain over the in-flight speaker system, been threatened in train carriages, encountered severe racism at work, ... The list is long, the racism is systemic, I found myself in so many light bulb moments around white privilege. Moments where as a non-turbaned person I wouldn't have had to think twice about doing or saying something, but where my turban -- perceived so often not just as a religious, but as a racial marker -- suddenly put me on that other side, the side where people have to be hyper vigilant of what they say or do just to stay safe and out of harm's way. I have unknowingly put my Indian Sikh friends at great risk a few times when I was still in this process of learning! Because what I could unproblematically say as a joke on a plane as a 'normal white person' - 'let's hijack this plane and fly to the Maledives' - I could no longer unproblematically say as a 'white turbaned person with 10 Indian Sikhs with her'. We all got removed from that plane by the police -- a pivotal moment in my understanding of white privilege - but one that came at a cost for 10 of my friends too.... And so this needs a post at some point, I can feel it forming inside me, it has been for 3 weeks now, and it will be something I will share here too. Not at all because I feel sorry for myself -- I don't, and what I encountered over the past 10 years is because of a choice I made and make every day again and will keep making every day of my life -- not because of a skin colour I was born in. And the way white privilege works is that I, in theory, still have every ounce of that privilege available to me should I choose so. (And many parts of it are still available to me). That choice is a privilege no person of colour will ever enjoy. The reason I want to write it is because it gave me first-hand experiences of glimpses into what life is when you are born with a different skin colour. And me recounting it - as this is how white privilege works - can find more of an audience and/or an audience amongst those who would possibly not be reached by the same stories recounted by people of colour. And I owe it to every student of colour and every person of colour that I use that privilege to reach the people I can reach.

It's been a topic in our classes too -- the throat chakra, letting those who have personally as well as communally never had a voice for the past centuries search for theirs; speaking versus not speaking; letting those whose voices have always been heard learn to now not speak, and instead sit and listen, ... -- as I am not working with any long-term class topic series right now, I can week per week adapt to what is touching us globally or more locally as a community of students.

One of my own ways of processing and peeling back the layers has been that I've started with some gardening on our 6 square metre patio. It's been a space where I can get my hands in the soil, where I can nurture growth, where I can connect, where I can become still, where pain can be transformed. With absolutely no prior experience, and taking the lessons as they come, I am currently tending to so many different pollinator flowers, herbs and vegetables, and it's been very grounding and joyful, especially during days where the pain of my community and family were profound and deep and too much for me to hold on my own. We are growing climbing jasmine, calendula, marigold, bergamot, evening primrose, motherwort, St John's wort, valerian, vervain, dill, borage, chamomile, lavender, marjoram, melissa, sage, mint, coriander, basil, rosemary, 5 types of thyme, many different pollinator flowers, mini citrus trees (orange, lemon, lime), strawberries, blueberries, blackcurrant, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chilies, onion, spring onion, chives, tomatoes, courgettes, cucumber, pak choy, celery, leeks, sweet peas, runner beans, carrots, beetroot, radishes, many types of lettuce, spinach, black kale, curly kale, romanesco cauliflower, purple sprouting broccoli. Seeing life unfold. Seeing things take birth and die. It is healing.
All of this has started to take form since last months's newsletter, when all I was growing were my aloe vera plants and some strawberries. The pain of the violence, persecution, genocide and racism, it all had to be tempered, and only Mother Nature herself could do so, especially in a time when we couldn't visit our Gurdwara Sahib. (some pictures from how things were 2 weeks ago - there is a lot more going on now:)

Now, where my offerings to you all are concerned, not much has been changing since May: all treatments, Closing the Bones ceremonies and trainings, and all in-person work is still cancelled. Yoga classes will stay online for the foreseeable future - I think for at least another few months.
But there are still our daily Zoom yoga classes, and there are 2 new beautiful upcoming Rebozo Self-Massage & Self-Wrapping Red Tents (we had one on Friday evening that never made it to a newsletter!);. And I'll include again the options for 1-2-1s and the current offers on Rebozos, malas, and products.

As stated last month, during lockdown I've made my Instagram account public - and it's by far the easiest place to always find all current offers and discounts that I'm running on Rebozos, malas, homemade and Neal's Yard products, etc. During this lockdown there have been several new discounted offers every week, so it's a useful place to keep an eye on. Many of these offers are currently still running. If you're not on social media but would still like to be kept up-to-date about these offers then do please let me know, as I could send them via email or Whatsapp to you if you wanted that.
Rebozo Self-Massage & Self-Wrapping Red Tents
During the Great British KY Festival I ran a Rebozo Self-Massage & Self-Wrapping Red Tent session, and as it was such a beautiful, nurturing and emotional experience for all present, I have started offering an even further expanded version of this workshop in online Women's Circle / Red Tent format. Our last session on Friday 19 June brought together 20 women from all over the world (US, UK, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands), from all walks of life and backgrounds, from so many different cultures, and from so many age groups ranging from teenagers and young adults to women in the peri-menopause and having entered those beautiful wisdom years of the crone. And it left me with a heart so full... (the picture at the beginning of this newsletter was taken right after the Red Tent Friday).

I am now offering 2 further sessions:

* Coming Friday 26 June 8-10pm GMT: https://www.facebook.com/events/210199923423151/

* Sunday 5 July (full moon!) 10am-12pm GMT: https://www.facebook.com/events/2654518224789176/

Women trying to conceive, women having recently given birth, women recently having miscarried. Women learning how to wrap and massage themselves when they are menstruating and how this nearly eliminates period pains. Women learning tools to help with their IBS. Women finding themselves again. Women falling in love with themselves again. Women honouring themselves again. Women rising up and holding the space for other women to rise up... Women diving deep into their pain, and coming back out on the other side. Women being vulnerable and real among other women.

Videos can be on or off, so you will be sharing as much as you are comfortable with.

II will be introducing you to the Rebozo or Manta, a shawl traditionally used in Closing the Bones or Cerrada-ceremonies. Traditionally offered during the postpartum (or to heal a miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, loss), Rebozo work as offered in Closing the Bones is also used to support us when menstruating, to mark major transitions in a woman’s life, such as the menarche, marriage, divorce, job or home changes, (peri)menopause, hysterectomy, … , to help with fertility problems, as well as for treatment of anxiety, shock, trauma, PTSD, ADD, autism, or sensory over-stimulation. There is nearly no end to its applications.

For me, the humble Rebozo or Manta symbolizes both the fabric and the tight weave of Sisterhood: it provides support, comfort, softness, the feeling of being held, and a chrysalis-like space for the many transformations we as women go through. While being rocked and wrapped in a Rebozo helps a woman to find her own self and center again and seals up any energy leakages, being in a circle of women can do the same thing for us. Now imagine the strength of those 2 combined…

So we will gather online, share (if wished) in a Women's Circle, and nourish ourselves with beautiful Rebozo massage techniques for the entire body from head to feet, with a tender womb-space massage and with Rebozo wrapping on ourselves, holding space for stagnated energy and stuck emotions to be released gently but powerfully.

I’ll show you several ways in which you can massage your entire body with a Rebozo (and even use it for stretches in your yoga practice), teach you to wrap your own head, torso, abdomen and hips, and show you some hands-on massage techniques for the abdomen and hips, helping to release tension from the abdominal fascia as well as adrenaline deposits on the hip bones.

Bring a Rebozo (or, if you don't have one, you can try a pashmina-type fabric (not too slippery though!)) to the session, and some massage oil and a small towel. The cloth you work with should be around 2-2.5m long, and 50-60cm wide.

If you would like to work with a Mexican Rebozo but you don't have one, you can purchase them from my webshop and I can parcel them out in time for the workshop. https://www.shuniya-yoga.org/shop/ - click further to Rebozos/Mantas.

Having worked with Rebozos on others (as a bone closer and Closing the Bones trainer) and on myself for over 4 years now, I find that no other type of cloth does this work as well and as subtly... It is capable of SO much: wrapping, holding, rocking. It is what holds a pregnant belly, what gives support in birth, what wraps the mother afterwards, what helps her wear her baby. What holds the womb space after a hysterectomy. What gives counter pressure during menstrual cramping and allows those cramps to just melt away. What can take away IBS cramping instantly. What centers someone during an episode of sensory overwhelm. What gives safety and security during anxiety, panic. What calms and centers in ADD. What creates a holding space during loss and grief for us to be with those emotions, but not be totally overtaken by them. What creates a space for us to (learn to) love ourselves in.
The chrysalis that allows for rebirth - whatever form that rebirth is meant to take.
If you ask me to name what has changed my life most profoundly in the last 4 years, it's these Rebozos and what they allow me to do for myself and others. The work they allow me to do. The feedback this cloth can give me as soon as I wrap it around myself or someone else...

The workshops will be held via Zoom - you will get login details sent out the day before the workshop.

Energy exchange is donation-based and suggested at £15/€17.50 but please feel free to donate what you feel is right for you. These donations can be made out in several ways:

* Bank details: Name: N. K. Bemong / Account nr 31285092 / Sort code 40-18-43
* PayPal: japjeetkaur1@gmail.com
* Bank details for payments in euro's: Name: Nele Bemong. IBAN BE26 0012 5724 9029. BIC-code GEBABEBB.

If you can't make this date/time, feel free to get in touch to be kept up to date about any future workshops of this kind.
Daily Zoom Yoga classes during this lockdown

For 3 months now - since Monday 23 March - I have been running 5 weekly Zoom classes, Monday to Friday.

(this is how you'll see me :) )

The first 3 days of the week we repeat the same kriya & meditation, so you get to experience a kriya and meditation much deeper. It's been wonderful to see so many of you joining 2-3 times every week for these!
* Monday 7-8.30pm
* Tuesday 7-8.30pm
* Wednesday mid-morning 10.30-12

In April we have added 2 more classes to that schedule:
* Thursdays 12-12.45pm: a shorter lunchtime class
* Fridays 4.30-5.15pm: weekly meditation class

--- these are the UK (GMT) times, add 1 hour for e.g. Belgium, the Netherlands, France, ...

You can always check this again on the Class Schedule page of my website.

I will be continuing with this schedule for the foreseeable future, and I am taking into account that this might be the new normal for several months still, as resuming in-person group classes with social distancing measures, even when we'd be allowed, would be extremely difficult in the smaller venues we use (especially at the Space to Breathe and my home). A very sunny summer might open up the option for classes outside, but we'd likely be surrounded by many others having the same idea, and finding some quiet spots might prove to be a real challenge. So for the time being, I'm working from the notion that classes will stay online for the foreseeable future.

I have been trying to arrange prices in the fairest possible way for both you all and myself, and it has been so fantastic to see how these online classes - even though they bring their own set of challenges, the top of the list being the lack of actual personal contact - have enabled several of you to join many more classes a week then previously (it's been wonderful to see so many of you 3, 4 and even 5 times a week), and have enabled students from further afield (Coventry where I used to teach, Belgium where I used to teach so much) to now join us too.

The payment structure can be found on the Prices page but I'll add it here again for ease of reference:

We are carrying on with the same prices as for our normal 90 min. Zoom group classes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but instead of access to 1 class a week you will get access to ALL 3 of these classes on Zoom every week!

  • Single week: £10
  • Series of 4 consecutive weeks: £35
  • Series of 8 consecutive weeks: £65
  • Concessions: £28 for 4-week series; £55 for 8-week series; £7.50 single week.

Additionally, for the 2 shorter (45 min.) Zoom classes on Thursday and Friday, you pay 1 fee but get to do both these classes if you want. Price is £5 per week for these 2 sessions (or £4.50 concession fee).

You will get all information to log in sent to your email after you've paid via BACS (bank details are in the green box on the Prices page - I can provide Belgian euro-account details for people in Europe).

Classes have been focusing on boosting the immune system, strengthening the aura, helping to control the mind and its wanderings during these challenging times, on reducing negativity and feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, worry, or panic, and on helping you feel connected during this time of physical isolation from the world around us. As written above, we have also been working on the throat & communication, on learning to speak up or listen. And last week's group classes focused on the EYES. And while that seems like such a strange and almost non-important area to focus on if you don't have vision problems, there was so much to unpack that I just want to share it here as well:

Our physical sight - during this lockdown likely quite affected and tired out by all that extra screen time.

Our two physical eyes and our third eye - the intuition, that which sees the unseen.

Any possible blockages in the stomach meridian line which starts at the eyes (our digestion starts at the eyes).

Clarity of vision, not clouded over by our prejudices, judgements, expectations, past experiences, belief systems, ...

The capacity to see, but also to unsee - under the mistakes and errors of our loved ones, to let them slip instead of allowing our ego to jump and pounce on them and point them out to our partner/sibling/child/parent/friend/... We can unsee so many things in our daily life (the beggar on the street, the row between a husband and wife, the bullying of someone on the bus, ...) that challenges us or makes us feel we should look away even when we shouldn't -- then can we not train ourselves to unsee those things that don't need to always be pointed out? (This is a tough one for me, I'm aware of that, and it's a work in progress).

Can we instead focus our vision on their beautiful qualities? Can we see God the Creator in our partner, siblings, parents, children, colleagues, boss, friends, ...?

Can we see the Creator in every animate and inanimate creation around us?

Can we - the hardest part of all - look at ourselves in this way? Not allowing our mind to always go back to the negatives in us, leading us to be filled with guilt and shame, but allowing us to see the Divine in ourselves? To really see God inside, not through ego, but through the eyes of love?

Even though we cannot be physically together, these online classes are allowing very powerful work to take place, and I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity to continue to teach.

1-2-1 Sessions

You can of course still book private Skype or Zoom sessions which can include:

* yoga classes

* health consultations

* consultations around fertility, pregnancy, birth

* pre- and postnatal yoga

* Kids/Family Yoga

* Meditation & Pranayam sessions

* coaching

With restriction slowly easing, we might be able to take these sessions from online to in-person if you live nearby and have a garden (I don't have one) or if we meet in the nearby Fosse Recreation Grounds at the top of my road or in the park along the canal...

As for the private yoga classes, this is also a great time to invest in doing a 5- or 10-session series (these are always discounted compared to individual sessions) on a specific topic to explore further, or something that will specifically serve you right now if you e.g. suffer from anxiety or feel overwhelmed.

       One thing I LOVE about Neal's Yard Remedies are their BOOKS! They publish the most fantastic books on Natural Health - on herbs, on aromatherapy, on nutrition, on massage ... These books are NOT promoting their products. Instead they are giving you information on health, nutrition, aromatherapy profiles and safety, ... PLUS all the information you need to make your OWN recipes for skincare, for herbal concoctions, for food, etc. I'm running a small promotion on 2 wonderful smaller books from their series:

- Looking Good and Feeling Younger (normal RRP £8.50)
- Little Book of Essential Oils (normal RRP £3.50)

I have 1 set of both books available for just £9.50 instead of £12! Of course you can also buy them both individually, and I have most of the other bigger books in the second picture available too.

These felt-padded EO lockets are always popular, so I'm offering them once more. If you buy one of the following NYR 10ml essential oil blends -- Meditation Blend £17.50, De-Stress £13.50 (not pictured) or Women's Balance £15.50 -- PLUS the stainless steel Rose locket (that's the only one I have currently available) £12.50 each (or £13.50 if you want to include the chain) which comes with a set of 10 (washable) differently coloured felt pads on which you'd simply put a few essential oil drops -- you get a FREE 5ml (!) Immune-System-boosting essential oil blend that I'll make for you and your family especially (taking into account whether you have small children, pets, ...). (Of course you can buy the oil blends and lockets separately as well at the prices indicated above). These lockets are a fantastic and very economic way to use your essential oils or oil blends, AND safe around pets and small children where diffusers often aren't (they are only safe depending on the oils used; the age of your kids; or the type of pets you have).

All of these offers have to be ordered through email or direct message - they are not as such available on my webshop.

   I still have a wonderful offer on combos of open & close weave rebozos AND on the 2m chakra colour set (only 1 available of these!): follow the Sale signs on the webshop

I have been making a lot of new malas during this lockdown (many bespoke orders among them) and some are on offer on the webshop as I was celebrating 1 year of mala making: browse the mala webshop or my Etsy shop to have a look at the offers!
