Happy Canada Day & Community Update: June 30th, 2020

Happy Canada Day!

Dear Friends,

2020 has been a year of immense challenges and not just with the pandemic. There have been other challenges we've had to face as a nation, yet Canada Day is a day to reflect on the fact that we live in the best nation on earth and we are very blessed and fortunate people. I wish you and your family a Happy Canada Day!

This year, my colleagues and I are unable to participate in the Scarborough Canada Day Parade, so we compiled this video to celebrate in lieu of marching in the parade.
I encourage you to check out the Government of Canada's virtual Canada Day celebrations, including the digital firework show, day/evening performances, and activities for the whole family.

McKay Virtual Fireside
Chat Series with
Community Leaders

Welcome to my fifth McKay Virtual Fireside Chat Series with Community Leaders - taped on Zoom and available online.

Our guest was Greg Fergus, the MP for Hull—Aylmer and the Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and to the Minister of Digital Government.

In the video, Greg Fergus offers thoughtful remarks about social justice and system racism.

Public Safety Committee Study: 'Issues of Systemic Racism in Policing in Canada'

Check out my COVID hair at the Public Safety Committee Meeting
Last week, I chaired the first of many meetings for the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security that will be investigating 'Issues of Systemic Racism in Policing in Canada'. We will continue to call more witnesses as we further probe this significant issue.

To learn more about our study, I invite you to watch the video above or read the article: RCMP Commissioner faces grilling on systemic racism

Canada Student Service Grant

On June 25th, Prime Minister Trudeau launched the Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG). This program will support post-secondary students and recent graduates as they volunteer to serve in their communities’ COVID-19 response and gain valuable experience at the same time. Eligibility for includes:
  •  Canadian citizens, permanent residents, registered Indians under the Indian Act or have refugee status, and
  • Enrolled and attending an accredited post-secondary institution during summer and/or in September 2020 or recently graduated no earlier than December 2019.
  • This includes part-time or full-time studies in pursuit of a degree, diploma or certificate at an accredited institution over a period of at least twelve weeks.
  • Students who received the CERB are not eligible for the CSSG. Students receiving CESB are eligible for the CSSG.
  • The CSSG will provide volunteers with a one-time payment of between $1,000 and $5,000 based on the number of hours they serve
  • In order to be eligible for the grant, the final day for students to register on the I Want to Help platform is August 21, 2020. The program closes on October 31, 2020.

Scarborough-Guildwood Virtual Town Hall

This past Friday, I joined my colleagues MPP Mitzie Hunter and City Councillor Paul Ainslie for a live town hall to answer constituent questions about the three level of government's response to the COVID-19 recovery and what moving into Stage 2 looks like for Scarborough. We were also joined by guest Liz Buller, President and CEO of Scarborough Health Network.

If you missed the live event, I encourage you to watch the video above.

Travel Advisory

Over the last few months, Global Affairs Canada undertook Canada’s largest and most complex ever consular operation to help Canadians return home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Government of Canada has largely completed that operation and is planning the final few remaining flights in the next weeks. Additional facilitated flights to bring Canadians home are not anticipated.

While some countries are preparing to partially open up their borders, the Government of Canada reminds all Canadians that a global travel advisory to avoid all non-essential travel outside Canada remains in effect. Travellers should also avoid all cruise ship travel until further notice.

Travellers returning to Canada are required to quarantine or self-isolate for 14 days. This is mandatory. For further information and a list of exemptions, consult the Travel restrictions, exemptions, and advice page.

How to wear a Non-Medical Mask or Face Covering

I encourage you to watch this video produced by the Government of Canada on how to properly wear a non-medical mask or face covering.

Non-medical masks are another layer of protection when physical distancing is not possible, but only if worn properly.

Mandatory Masks or Face Coverings on the TTC

Effective July 2, masks or face coverings are mandatory when travelling on the TTC, with the exception of:

  • Children under two years of age.

  • Persons who are unable to place or remove a mask or face covering without assistance.
  • TTC employees and agents within an area designated for TTC personnel and not for public access, or within or behind a physical barrier or shield.
