June e-Newsletter

With a total of 78 applications, there was high demand for the City of Boroondara’s recent Small Business Resilience Grants.  The grants will assist businesses to improve their ability to operate in an online environment.  Successful applicants will be contacted in the coming weeks and we're looking forward to featuring their stories in future editions.

Following that popularity, the City of Boroondara is now accepting applications for the COVID 19 Quick Response Grants program.  This new grant is open to Trader Associations and eligible not for profit organisations.  Further details are included below.

The City of Boroondara’s new Business Support Service is quite literally ‘open for business’.  The service will provide assistance to those trying to navigate the requirements, processes and permits needed when opening a new business, or making changes to an existing one.  More information on the service can be found below.

Also in this edition, we’ve profiled three of Boroondara’s wonderful local businesses, provided links to a range of support services being offered to business and included our regular update on Business Boroondara workshops.  The workshops continue to be delivered online and at no cost to participants.

Separation Anxiety - Is your furbaby at risk?

The COVID-19 crisis has caused significant changes in our daily routines.  While our four-legged friends have enjoyed many benefits from our extended time at the home, a sudden disruption caused by returning to work can leave our furbabies struggling with significant emotional distress.

Separation anxiety presents itself as a behavioural issue and includes excessive barking, whining, chewing furniture, urinating in the house, digging or escaping your yard.

Melanie Scott K9 Training offers three top tips to help you to prepare your dog prepare for the transition to normality.

1. Stick to Routine - Dogs love routine! While gradually increasing the time your dog spends entertaining itself, be sure to establish consistent patterns of rest, exercise and feeding times.

2. Exercise - Stick to an exercise routine that you are able to maintain once you return to work.

3. Toys and Treats - To break the isolation while you are away interactive toys such as Kongs are an excellent way to keep your dog entertained.  These long-lasting treat-dispensing toys provide hours of entertainment along with Nylabones, pig ears or deer antlers.

If your dog is exhibiting separation anxiety behaviours for longer than two weeks after you establish your new work routine, please seek professional advice on more options to help calm your dog.

Sparrow Health

Transformation through physical, mental and dietary health

Do you hate the gym? Do you want to exercise in a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment – by fairy light? Do you know anyone on the NDIS?

When we think about life events, we automatically think about the big stuff such as getting married, having children, changing jobs or moving house.  However, as we journey through life, there are also daily events.  Smaller things like getting to places on time, performing well or life admin.  At some point in our lives, everything can take a toll and the effects on our health and psychological well-being can be profound.

After enjoying a long career in the arts industry, Amy Dwight’s life completely changed when she experienced a heartbreaking situation and the intense grief that accompanied it.  Recognising her vulnerability, she decided to use exercise as a way of managing the grief and she eventually began taking positive steps to rebuild the strength required to move through each day.  The essential building blocks of physical, mental and dietary health were so transformative it led her to create her own business, Sparrow Health.

Sparrow is a unique NDIS registered group and personal training organisation whose focus is on developing health while creating social and personal transformation.  They run affordable nutrition and fitness programs with a special interest in supporting those living with mental illness and intellectual disability.  “We focus on each person to unlock the key to better physical and mental health so people can lead confident and rich lives. Our personalised and creative programs cater for needs of each individual,” says Amy.

“We are not your typical gym, and you don’t even have to like exercise to train with us. Surrounded by the ambience of twinkling fairy light, our workouts transform the mood and are very popular for people who really dislike the gym.  We offer safe, small group training in an environment that fosters fitness, health, compassion and fun.”

Sparrow Health sets itself apart from many other programs by its uniquely designed creative approach to fitness. In turn, when life events occur, individuals are in a better position to uncover the necessary coping resources to facilitate positive adjustment and lead more rewarding lives.

AVOR
The complete end-to-end experience for design & construction

As the COVID pandemic impacts our livelihoods, the struggle to survive in a treacherous economic climate has led to a marked surge of innovative thinking.  In an environment where literally ‘only the fittest survive’, businesses are forced to create new strategies and respond to the latest trends in consumer needs.  As we witness the tidal wave of change, one crucial aspect of good business is the ability to embrace a niche.

Established in 2016, AVOR offers complete end-to-end architectural and construction service on a wide range of residential and commercial projects.  With over 30 years of combined experience, founding owners, Amy Banks-Smith and Oliver Mackie, launched their business with a strong desire to provide a seamless experience through all stages of the construction process.

“By its very nature, the construction industry is complex.  From concept to completion, dealing with an experienced team of reliable consultants and contractors within the one organisation means no stone is left unturned in delivering projects which exceed expectation,” says Amy and Oliver.

AVOR prides itself on excellent communication skills and the ability to cultivate the client’s dreams into reality. As a qualified Architect, Amy has earnedt a fine reputation for innovative and sustainable design.  While Oliver is a well-respected Registered Builder and Member of the Australian Institute of Project Management, he brings an added depth of knowledge and management skills.  Together, this dynamic duo showcases an extraordinary balance of creativity with practical design to timely execute on a diverse range on projects.

From single dwellings to multi-residential developments to large public infrastructure projects, AVOR’s holistic approach offers a refreshing change to the often disjointed services many people and organisations experience when undertaking any construction project.  With such a unique point of difference, it’s no wonder AVOR are industry leaders in all buildings big or small.
