Hello, welcome to my latest newsletter. This edition features my LIVE Facebook Q&A events, my continued drive to ensure vulnerable residents are supported and the urgent need to address assaults on emergency workers. My office is currently working remotely and, as a consequence, we are unable to take phone calls to our usual OPCC number. You can still contact us by emailing opcc@westmercia.pnn.police.uk and through our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Both emails and social media platforms are monitored throughout normal working hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). Please stay safe and look out for each other.
With Covid-19 forcing the cancellation of many summer events, Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion is giving West Mercia residents the chance to engage virtually with him, and local policing Superintendents, in a series of live question and answer sessions.
  • 29th June 5pm – North Worcestershire Superintendent Colquhoun
  • 30th June 5pm – Herefordshire Superintendent Thomas
  • 2nd July 5pm – South Worcestershire Superintendent Brighton
Each session can be viewed on the PCC's Facebook page. Submit your questions about policing, particularly around key summer safety topics such as water safety, fraud, burglary, rural crime and road safety to opcc@westmercia.pnn.police.uk, highlighting the area you live.

PCC welcomes move to outlaw rough sex bill

In the UK, 60 women and seven men have been killed as a result of claimed ‘sex gone wrong’, with three of these cases involving women from West Mercia. In the last five years, this defence has been successful in nearly half of the killings that went to trial. I am shocked that this is an argument that has ever been justified and  I welcome the move to outlaw the 'rough sex’ defence.

The best interests of communities must come first

Following the delay of joint governance of police and fire services in West Mercia I remain committed to acting in the best interests of our communities. The public is right to demand the best possible police and fire services, with the maximum amount of resource focused on the frontline.

Urgent change needed as figures show an increase in officer assaults

In 2018/19 there were 538 assaults in West Mercia on frontline officers, including Special Constables and PCSOs, with the figure for 2019/20 rising to 659. Violence against police, or anyone within the emergency services is never acceptable. We must do all we can to protect those who protect us.

Calls for continuing support

The way our communities have pulled together during the Covid-19 pandemic, to ensure those most vulnerable and at risk are fully supported, has been amazing to see. However, it shouldn’t stop there as many of us return to the routines we had before. It is key that we take the lessons we have learnt during these challenging times and ensure all the good we have done isn’t lost.

The weather is set to reach very high temperatures. Don't be tempted to swim in local quarries, they present more dangers than just cold water.

Armed Forces Day

This week is Armed Forces Week culminating in Armed Forces Day. I am incredibly proud that West Mercia Police employs a large number of officers and staff from a military background. It is important we honour and celebrate the significant contribuiton service personnel make.

Do you have a question about Covid-19 national guidelines?

The Government has published guidance on what you can and can't do. If you are unsure what the rules mean, visit their FAQ page. By following guidance we can save lives and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Earlier this month West Mercia Police launched the We Don’t Buy Crime website. This new website will be a valuable tool for people, by providing them with the advice and information they need to avoid becoming a victim of crime. As Commissioner I am committed to protecting the most vulnerable, which is why I continue to support this initiative with funding.
