The Oaxaca Lending Library
is currently closed to patrons until further notice.

Message from the OLL Board of Directors
REGARDING OPENING THE OAXACA LENDING LIBRARY

We hope everyone who is receiving this newsletter is well, practicing social distancing, making the best of this new way of life and helping others where and how they can.

The Oaxaca Lending Library is looking forward to re-opening in a way that serves the community while protecting the health of everyone involved. Before we can re-open, even in a limited way, there are steps the government requires. We need to be registered with the government via a platform that is currently difficult to access. Once on it, we will have forms to fill out in order to be classified in group 1-4 in terms of being “essential”. Our best guess is we will fall in group 3 or 4.

So, the Oaxaca Lending Library will remain closed until we are
  1. given permission from the government to open in a phased manner, and
  2. able to put all necessary precautions in place for a safe environment.
Our primary commitment is to the safety and well-being of our patrons, staff, and volunteers. The state of Oaxaca has a number of protocols in place and we will be submitting our detailed plans to the appropriate government authority for approval and/or revision before we are able to open.

We are hoping this will be some time during the month of July but that timing slips the closer it comes so it could be August or later. A sub-committee of the Board of Directors is working hard on re-opening plans including timing, phases of operation, sanitation, filtering of air, flow of patrons, etc.

In the meanwhile, to protect their health our staff are able to handle all library issues that arise and can maintain financial accounts remotely through our online connections. But be assured, they are being paid full salary throughout this time of quedate en casa.

Please stay tuned for announcements of timing and procedures over the coming weeks.

  • Many OLL members took out a large number of books and CDs just before we closed in early April. We would very much appreciate having those books returned when you can, using the book drop slot in the outside gate. That will allow us to sanitize those materials and make them available for other patrons once we are open.
  • Construction next door. In short, it started and then stopped, and we do not know when it will resume. The front of the library is sealed with plastic and the shelves are also blocked off with plastic to protect the books/CDs and computers are covered.

ARCHIVING THE PANDEMIC IN OAXACA:
How will this time be remembered?
A Project of the Oaxaca Lending Library

Call for Submissions
Calling all members and friends of the Oaxaca Lending Library. Be you here, there, or anywhere, we are requesting your assistance in documenting the Covid-19 pandemic as it relates to Oaxaca.

A committee has been formed, we have met via Zoom, and have expanded the scope of this project to include more than just photographs. We are looking for:

▪ Stories in prose or verse re your experience - Adapting to physical distancing, mask-wearing, business closures in Oaxaca; helping Oaxacans from here and from afar, trials and tribulations of returning to your home country from Oaxaca as the pandemic unfolded, thoughts about returning to Oaxaca, etc.

▪ Photographs and/or videos related to Oaxaca - Signs, a social-distancing encounter, your family living under different circumstances, empty streets, your mask, masks you are sending to Oaxaca, your artwork, etc. You get the idea!

Email your submissions to: Newsletter@oaxlibrary.org with the subject line Submission: Pandemic Archive.

ARCHIVING THE PANDEMIC IN OAXACA
How this time be remembered...

A Project of the Oaxaca Lending Library

We have received a nice response to our first call for submissions to this project sent in by members and friends who are currently in Oaxaca and those who are back safely in their homes in the US, Canada and other exotic places. Some of what we've received has to do with nature, comforting and constant source of peace and beauty. Other entries share how they are finding new ways to be social. To view the submissions please CLICK HERE.

UPDATES FROM THE OLL'S OUTREACH COMMUNITY
LIBROS PARA PUEBLOS UPDATE
We are happy to report that LPP's Oaxaca-based staff and Regional Coordinators, located throughout the state, are in good health and are continuing the work of Libros. We have adjusted our work to maintain continuity of programs and to focus time and energy on projects that had taken a back-seat to other “on-the-ground” activities during the high season. READ MORE.

CLICK HERE to read the most recent message from LPP.

During this difficult time due to COVID-19 reading promoters are adapting their practices. Some of the LPP volunteer Regional Coordinators are using social media to continue reaching children and young people. We invite you to visit the LPP FACEBOOK site where those activities are being posted.

UPDATE FROM THE
OAXACA LEARNING CENTER

Teaching remotely and expanding its impact.
The school team continue to serve students on line through the summer. They are serving over 100 students remotely now and anticipate even more students for summer school (7/13-8/8). So that students could participate, the school purchased phones and data cards for students. In addition, funds were made available to pay for internet services when needed by the family. READ MORE.

CAMERATA OAXACA UPDATE
The well-known Camerata Oaxaca has posted a “Camerata in confinement” message describing their members’ activities during the COVID-19 contingency. You can read this, along with other information about the coordinators and musicians, and listen to a music clip at their website.

FUNDACION EN VIA UPDATE
En Via has a new fundraising campaign...GROWING STRONG. It is the answer to the economic collapse the current pandemic has caused by the lack of tourism and suspension of our tours. Many of the indigenous female entrepreneurs En Via works with have lost their income and have no way to support themselves and their families until the economy picks up again. GROWING STRONG is an exciting project to provide 200 of them with home gardens and/or chicken farms to support their own consumption.  They can also then sell any surplus within their communities. READ MORE. Here is a direct link to the campaign through Omprakash where you can also find more information about the project.

INSTITUTO de ORGANOS HISTORICO de OAXACA FOR YOUR VIEWING ENJOYMENT
IOHIO is pleased to share with you the film Baroque Pipe Organs of Oaxaca, an episode in the series In the Americas with David Yetman, from the PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) television programs.  Internationally renowned writer, host, producer, and organ aficionado, Yetman and his collaborator, historian Bill Beezley, kindly offered to film part of the IOHIO's Twelfth International Organ and Early Music Festival in February 2018, with the goal in mind of setting it in the broader context of the landscape, peoples, and history of Oaxaca. This beautiful film is now available at  www.intheamericas.org season 8. It highlights not only the Oaxaca organs and aspects of the IOHIO Organ Festival, but also includes breathtaking aerial views of churches and landscapes, as well as scenes of local village culture. Enjoy!

UPDATE FROM CANFRO
(Canadian Friends of Oaxaca)
The pandemic continues to hit Oaxaca hard. Many businesses are closed, tourism has collapsed, and families who subsist economically at the best of times face brutal challenges. CANFRO project managers continue to be in regular contact with our partner agencies in Oaxaca. We are proud to report that the people administering our six projects have truly risen to the occasion, finding innovative ways to provide support to the children and youth and their families who we serve.
