Our Amazing Mentors!

Since we were unable to celebrate graduation in person with our Johnston Youth Mentoring Program seniors and their mentors this year, JUMP staff members delivered yard signs as a small token of our appreciation to mentors matched with 2020 seniors.

Mentors, please know that as our seniors receive their diplomas from Johnston High School, we are thinking of you and are so grateful for the difference you made in the life of a JHS graduate!

Thank You!!!

Board Member Spotlight

Each month, we will be spotlighting a board member. Today we will find out more about Barb Allen!

Tell me a little about yourself.
Semi retired registered nurse. I was a school nurse for Johnston schools. Retired and currently substitute for the Johnston nurses and am a clinical adjunct instructor for Grand View College of Nursing. Married with three grown children and 6 grandchildren, all of who live in or near Johnston. I am also a member of the Kiwanis of Johnston and have been a JUMP mentor.

Why did you become involved in the Johnston Partnership, and what has your involvement looked like over time?
I am one of the founders of the Johnston Partnership. We began as a community health advisory committee created by me and another school nurse in the early 90's. The organization became a 501c3 in 2002 and our programs and services have grown from there.

What makes the Johnston Partnership mission meaningful to you?
My involvement in this organization from the start was all about addressing the needs of children and families in our school district and community. As a parent, grandparent and former school nurse, it is very apparent to me that those basic needs addressed in our mission statement are essential for children, individuals and families in our community to thrive personally, educationally and emotionally. This, in turn, makes for a healthy and prosperous community. This is not only the responsibility of our organization but it is the responsibility of our city, our faith communities and our citizens.

The Johnston Partnership Clothing Room Update

Our clothing room will begin accepting all clothing donations July 1st!! Thank you for your patience as we slowly reopen these services after the pandemic. If you can wear it, we'll take it! Donations can be brought to the door during our operating hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 9am-1pm. Pantry entrance is still limited to staff and limited volunteers. Clothing order forms for clients can be found on our website.

Effective March 17th, the Johnston Partnership will be operating under new procedures to inhibit the spread of Covid-19.

As always, we ask that any staff or volunteers stay home if sick. Just like school, you need to be fever free and 24 hours removed from any symptoms before coming to the pantry.

We continue to clean as we always have, as we do have high traffic volume in our small space. All surfaces that are regularly touched - door handles, grocery carts, the bathroom, etc. will be cleaned at the end of the pantry day. We have hand sanitizer, hand soap and paper towels on hand, and encourage regular breaks for anyone who touches food to wash hands.

The Johnston Partnership will operate our Food Pantry with a paper order form. After placing an order, clients will be asked to wait in their vehicles or outside while it is being completed. Call/email ahead orders are also welcome, using the forms found on our website. Email orders to andrea@johnstonpartnership.org or call in at 515-528-2379 or 515-868-1357. Staff & volunteers will be the only ones allowed inside the pantry. Staff will be the only ones with any client contact, as food pantry volunteers will be pulling orders, stocking and organizing as always. Anytime items will be pre-bagged and distributed according to family size.

Our clothing room will be closed until further notice, as there will be no safe way to operate that space. If you have donations, we ask that you hold them until at least April 14th.

Our newly-formed Benevolence Fund will still be accessible. This is open to those who live within the Johnston School District boundaries, and it does require a short application/interview process. We are able to assist with financial needs such as rental assistance, utility assistance or other emergency financial needs.

We thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. It is critical that we find a way to stay open, as the needs around food insecurity will only increase when people are home for long periods of time. We will be open during our regular hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays 9am-1pm.

If you would like to help, we will still need volunteers! Sign up (or walk-in) at www.johnstonpartnership.org. Monetary donations go a lot further to help us fill ever changing needs. Click the DONATE button on our website!

We are still accepting food donations, personal care donations and monetary donations. Please click here to make a monetary donation. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
