Encouraging Proactive Disclosure to Maintain Public Trust

While the main focus right now is getting supplies due to the pandemic, transparency must be maintained to ensure that legitimate decisions are being taken, to prevent fraud, and to maintain public trust. Based on this, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) released guidelines for procuring entities to prepare procurement plans for all projects that specifically respond to the Covid-19 Virus. With this in view, PPDC released a press statement urging public institutions to comply with the directives while also promising to be actively involved with monitoring the process to ensure that resources are allocated effectively.

Data Splash

Since the revised budget was released, Nigerians have been outraged over the cuts made in the health and education sectors and rightfully so.  In a country of over 200 million people, who are already economically overburdened, a paltry N44.73 billion for basic health care for 200 million people in 774 local governments, particularly at this time the nation is facing huge health challenges, isn't ideal. Are these sectors no longer key to development? Can all Nigerian Children now access standard education? What are your thoughts on this? You can chat with us on our social handles. Your Voice Is Important to Advocate For Open Contracting

Why should you advocate for open contracting? Here are a few reasons

  • Open contracting builds a fairer business environment and creates a level playing field for suppliers where all have access to the same information and opportunities

  • Open Contracting prevents fraud and corruption

  • It creates an environment with less fraud and waste which directly translates to better public service delivery

  • It transforms government contracting from secrecy to publishing open, accessible and timely contracting data

As a Nigerian Citizen, it is our responsibility to demand for open systems from our government. We need to:

Lend our voice!

Ask questions!

Hold our government accountable!

Media Rounds For The Month

Since the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) released its guidelines for procuring entities, we have been all over the media advocating for compliance and educating Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and citizens on the need for public disclosure of information.

Here is a round-up of what we were up to;

                                 We were on Channels TV

We featured on the sunrise daily show on Channels television with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to discuss the guidelines recently put out for procuring entities.  The conversation centered on the need for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with the directives while also calling on citizens and investigative journalists to interact with the datasets uploaded on the NOCOPO platform.  Click here to watch the full conversation.

We also stopped by at AIT

We also visited AIT to share an analysis of data uploaded on Nigeria’s Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO) after the release of the BPP guidelines. During the conversation, the data analysts acknowledged an increase in data availability on the portal and stressed the need for procuring MDAs (especially Teaching Hospitals and Medical Centres) to adhere to the directives of the Bureau.  Find the rest of the conversation Here.

     Public Conscience Radio

Still part of our media rounds, we collaborated with the Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development (Primorg), who hosts the popular show called “Public Conscience” on radio 99.9Kiss FM Abuja to discuss the implementation of the BPP guidelines on Covid-19 procurement. The guests present continuously called for full implementation of the guidelines from government institutions. Find the link to the full conversation here

We took it to the radio stations too. (Vision FM 92.1)

On 92.1 Vision FM, we discussed connecting the dots for open contracting to thrive in Nigeria. Here, we highlighted our work in furthering the course of open contracting in Nigeria and how ensuring that the new BPP guidelines are fully implemented translates to transparency and value for money. You can find the full discussion here.

Keep Your Community Informed!!

Even though essential businesses are back operating, the pandemic is by no means over, let's remember to keep ourselves safe and educate people in rural areas too. Here are some tips on how to wear your face masks correctly in different languages. Share with your contacts in local communities to educate them on the right way to wear a face mask.
